Best Happy Hour in Key West?

Hi Folks:

We are going to Key West for Pirate Week this year (Aargh!) Staying at the Galleon. This will be our FIRST TIME in Key West even though we live in Florida year round.

I am interested in finding the best LOCALS happy hours in terms of price and "freebies". Now, as a Florida resident, I know there are plenty of Happy Hours that are set up for the tourists--but I also know that there are lots of better ones that the locals keep to themselves. Tourists sometimes stumble in and find out the great secret....Prices in Florida are NORMAL for residents, not jacked up as in the tourist traps! You just need to know where the locals hang out.

So that being said--has anybody got any recommendations for Key West?

Duval street, though geared to tourists, is loaded with Happy Hour specials, really really cheap ones, especially if you like beer. Several places offer live music (quality not guaranteed) in the afternoons, too. And, fwiw, prices in Key West are generally higher than other places in Florida, according to the locals I spoke with. There didn't seem to be much going on outside of Old Town. There is a place on Stock Island, Hogfish, that was recommended as a good local place, though we never made it there.

I'm a tourist but we like the Schooner Wharf Bar. Michael McCloud is great entertainment.

Our favorite was
Pepe's Cafe & Steak House

We were there two years ago but they had $1 yenglings. Don't know if still do. Small bar only locals and spent every afternoon for an hour or so chatting with the people. True story, one afternoon after chatting we realized we were the only ones in the bar that did not have an open arrest warrant in at least one state in this great country of ours

Check out Turtle Kraals on the bight. It's an easy walk from the Galleon. Just be careful on the walk home, if you fall in the water you'll be sleeping wit da fishes.

We stopped by the Hogfish(not to be confused with the Hog's Breath--off Duval) the last time we were in Key West. It's a little hole in the wall place right on the bay about a mile south of US1 on stock island. I don't remember the cross street but any local or the concierge could probably give you directions; you'll need them because you won't be able to find it yourself. The food was nothing special, but good basic inexpensive fare. I'd go back there for a beer and a meal. Definitely a local hangout.

My recommendation is Alonzo's Oyster Bar located right on the Gulf under the A&B Lobster House at 700 Front St., their Happy Hour is every day starting around 4:30 to 6:30 which includes half price appetizers & drinks with a very nice view of the Marina ifin you sit outside.

The Hogfish is located on Stock Island & as you are leaving Key West on US 1, take the fork in the road to your right, take 2nd Ave. to your right & you"ll see signs to Hogfish which is a block or two away & we think that its very good since we have been going there for several years, try the Shrimp Shack just a block away for some really fresh fish as its caught daily right from the boat!
