  • Where to stay in SW Florida?

We live on the east coast of Florida and are intrigued about all the threads regarding the beautiful beaches in SW Florida. I'd be interested in getting feedback from people who are familiar with this area on a place to stay for a long weekend. We have two kids (10 and 12) and would like a nice place right on the beach. I am not familiar with this area at all but hear that Sarasota area is great.

    Thanks for your help!

I would choose Sarasota area, and I have heard the best reports about Siesta Key, or choose Sanibel/Captiva.

      Pat's right.

Siesta Key Beach is one of only two Florida beaches that are on the Travel Channel's Top Ten list for all of the USA.

Their list of Top Ten Florida beaches includes Siesta Key Beach, Sanibel beaches, and Lover's Key, between Bonita beach and Ft. Myers Beach.

For me, SW FLorida has always started when we cross the Caloosahatchee bridge, but it is now creeping further North. I'm not sure I would creep it all the way up to Sarasota, though.

I have been going to SW Florida since the 70's and have no complaints whatsoever about the beaches or the areas of Sanibel/Captiva, Ft. Myers Beach, Lover's Key, Bonita, Vanderbilt, Naples, or Marco Island. That entire area is just one stretch of great beaches and is a beautiful area.

Feel free to email me for specific resort information.

Personally, I love Marco Island. We live over in Boca and go there for a week each year. The beaches are great for shelling, very good restaurants and good shopping too! You're in striking distance of Miramar outlets as well. Linda

I like Key largo. There you have pennykamp state park, which has the statue of the abyss and The USS Washington wreck (all you see is the guts). It is considered as Americas First underwater park. It has great coral reefs and tons of fish. They have snorkeling, SCUBA, Glass bottom boats, boat rentals. If you do the SCUBA diving tour with Captin Slate you can see him feed the fish underwater and a Moray Eel. I have SCUBA dived all over The Florida Keys and you just can't go wrong with any water activity there.

Another of the Top Ten Florida beaches is down that way, Bahia Honda.
