If you aren't renting a car I'd say DVC. We have a Hilton timeshare and love it except for the lack of free shuttles. You have to pay for one and it only goes to EPCOT (as far as our last visit went).

We stay on International Drive and Hilton has some fun programs that are either free or a few dollars and you can do a pay as you go without committing to activities the kids don't want.

On Saturdays they have a movie shown at the main pool and the kids can sit on floats, swim or sit in the lounge chairs.

We are not going to go for another year now but we definatly will be renting a car and thinking of river island orange lake. We are thinking the begining of May to avoid crowds.

Beginning of May is a slower time for the parks and area. There are usually lots of things in RCI last call then. good time of year to go...

Since you are going in May I'd try for a last call for Sheraton Vistana. It's a real nice resort and there is usually last call inventory for $249 for a 2 bedroom and it's down the road from Downtown Disney.
Ask them for one of the remodeled rooms when you get there.

You could always just park in downtown Disney and use the buses from there. Saves on parking fees.

What are some "non disney" things to do with a 5 & 4 y/o? Nearest beach? Maybe an everglade tour? We may try to be there for 2 weeks to have time to "do it all"

The Everglades are way south and i don't think very good for 4 and 5 year olds. We took our grandchildren to Medieval Times and they had a blast, as did the adults.

There are a few vendors in the Orlando area that offer airboat rides, so you won't have to go down to S. Florida.. Try Orlando Attractions -Things to do in Orlando Florida - Airboat Rides Orlando on Lake Jessup and you'll see PLENTY of gators!

For beaches- you've got either coast to explore with an hour of two in the car..

Central Florida will give you so many options you'll be amazed!

Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral have the closest beaches. Nice parks and within an hour drive.

Haven't been there, but the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne is supposed to be terrific - the reviews are, anyhow. They've got a petting zoo with armadillos; you can feed the giraffes and birds (the food is extra), and they have an extensive play area that my kids would have enjoyed at that age.

It's about an hour and twenty minutes from the resort we're staying at in Orlando, but you could stop in Cocoa Beach or somewhere else on the ocean and make a day trip of it.
