  • Need Thoughts About a Couple of the Lesser SW FL Resorts

Yeah, I know, I'm supposed to know everything about everything down thataway.

Actually, I know enough to not jump right on a couple I'm seeing, but they are all I'm seeing, and have been seeing, day after day after day after day, so I have to consider them.

Estero Island Beach Club, 1 bedroom Deluxe. I know it's a lesser, motel conversion, and the unit is very small, but . . . the pictures don't look all that bad, it has two pools--one on the beach--and BBQ grills. I called to check what unit and 101 is available. Of course, that is the one nearest the road and the lobby/office. But, it is on the beach.

Tropical Sands. Yeah, I know it's on the wrong side of the road, and right where the stinky lagoon is, so it is 2 miles to a beach, but, it is a 2-bedroom unit. But, in this case, the pictures don't look very encouraging, like the interiors need a makeover bigtime.

A possibility is to take one, but keep looking, then switch if something better shows up . . . if I have something to keep searching with.

So whattya think? Should I take a resort we really don't want, to be where we want to be?

This is just one woman's opinion. No I wouldn't take it.

The one year I had an on-going search for this area as well as manually searching for 15 months prior to check-in. At 6 months I cracked and booked a very nice place on the "other" southern coast.

Knowing what I know now I would be tempted to stick it out and when things get reall close book a "we don't really want to stay here but it's in the right place" unit with cancellation insurance and a way to check what's coming up LM.

We discussed that game plan back then, and I didn't see anything come up.

But, I am thinking about not booking the second week for next January, mostly because you can't book something that is not available, then go ahead and book air with trip insurance, so I could change it without a penalty if a second week did show up LC or LM.

Or, as in my other thread, book something in a jungle setting, so we can look at giraffes instead of dolphins.

I'd rather smell dolphins than giraffes. Although I love giraffes if it isn't taking a banana out of my hand while I sit on the deck of my unit...give me a beach.

          Tropical Sands

We rented a unit there about 4 or 5 years ago. The unit was okay. Not a Marriott, but not a dump either. We walked the beach to the Holiday Inn which is where the nicer beach area starts. We also went to the state park on Lover's Key, since we buy a yearly pass to Florida State Parks. I think we only were there two nights and it was a few years ago, but I'd go back if it was the best I could find.

Check that trip insurance policy carefully. They often don't cover "Well, we decided to stay an extra week."

I'm talking about a different thingie and just called it trip insurance cuz thingie didn't sound as good.

You pay the airline $30 extra per itinerary and that allows you to reschedule without a $50 per leg cancellation fee. In this case we would only be rescheduling one leg, either the one down or the one back.

                Hi,
I stayed at Beach club once and it was actually in a real nice beach area on the North side of the island. They had a nice pool area and a chicki where you could barbecue on the beach. This area was quieter than near the Pier but the sand not as wide as the Holiday Inn. The rooms about 5 years ago needed updating but I think most of Ft. Myers needs updating except for the more upscale resorts like Pink Shell, Diamond Head, La Playa etc.
I was able to get a trade into Beach club I last month for use in August. Actually surprisingly they gave me a 2 bedroom for my 1 bedroom in Fort Lauderdale so I was pleasantly surprised at RCI. Have to say they've been good to me lately. I'd recommend taking Beach club and if you are there in August 16th look me up. I'll be sunning myself by the beach.

                  I can't take what's not available.

Not looking to go in August, either.

At least I am not alone . . . I have been looking at these resorts for some time, so no one else wants them and they did not match to any ongoing search.

Well I'm glad that I didn't take the inventory you were eyeing. If you do see it I'd take it. I also find that sometimes inventory is available that no one seems to grab but when I do buy it that it is nicer than I expected. Usually though it is from last calls but I've been lucky with exchanges lately too. Maybe it's just the economy factor. Everything these days is because of the economy, right?
