  • Our January FL Itinerary

Allegiant from Springfield MO to Clearwater/St. Pete is $69 per leg, so I booked it. With all the fees, for 2, $435. That's about half what it was when we booked last January this time last year.

There was an option for a mid-size SUV for $400, for 13 days, and that's the type of low price we'all here jump for, so I selected it. When I got to the fine print page, it said that did not include the fees, which it said could be as high as $20 per day, so I declined the rental car.

So, we need a minivan or midsize SUV for 1/2-15/2010 at Clearwater/St. Pete airport.

Speaking of rental car, I have never gotten one through Priceline or Hotwire.

Do their prices include everything, all the fees, and when you bid, does your bid include everything?

      Curious. How did it go from $69 each way, to $435 for two? $69 X 2 = $138 X 2 = $276. This rest is fees?!!

Luggage, although I only chose one each. We get one, a carry-on that will fit under the seat, and a purse-like bag, including computer case.

        $30 Tripflex (cancellation insurance)

I'll look at it when I'm at my other computer.

I answered my previous question . . . with Priceline you bid an amount per day and on the next page they add the taxes and fees before you submit the bid.

Any discounts codes floating around . . . since I'm so good with them?

So Jim, where are you going next January? Will you be staying in Clearwater? What timeshare?

My exploits are on my SW FL in January thread, which I may have to rename Not SW FL in January.

We have gotten the same unit at a homely little resort in Englewood for Week 1 last year, next year and the next next year.

Still looking for both Week 2s.

I tried Priceline a little higher than the good National code last year got and was declined for a minivan and an SUV.

Entertainment books have coupon codes in them. I'll be home next week if you want me to PM you a code. I've got a Florida entertainment book although the coupons in any entertainment book will work. I just used one for Alamo in Boston and got a free SUV upgrade too. Try Alamo they are sometimes cheaper than National and it's the same company anyway. I booked online and they never asked me for the coupon. Got my SUV for half of what everyone else was charging

It is amazing how many fees they can tack on. "Convenience Fee"?? Ha! Ha! Trip Flex???? What is that?? I guess its a way to say they fares are really low. Still . . . $435 is not a bad deal.

Actually Trip Flex is a good deal. It saves $50 per leg if you change your reservation, so you can rebook at lower fares, or change a travel date, without penalty.

Last year it would have saved us $200, which it did for the couple who joins us since they forgot to decline it.

At the last minute last year our flights dropped to $29 per leg. (Well, plus fees, of course.)

                            Back to the rental car.

Last year using the moochy National code and Emerald Club, for one day longer, the same rental was $400-ish--for a minivan. Emerald Club this year is $1500-ish. Using the Avis/Budget link on RCI, it is $800-ish.

Normally a good discount contract ID gets around $550-ish.

Here's what I'm looking for, if you've got time on your hand.

                            Pickup and dropoff: PIE
                            Pickup: 1/2/10 10 PM
                            Dropoff: 1/15/10 3 PM
                            Minivan or mid-size SUV

I am bidding $25/day on priceline, which totals $454 with fees. Now it is suggesting that I bid $32 a day. I'm guessing that would put it at the $550 that is the normal good deal, but not the good good deal of last year.

I've got time to wait and play around, but let me know if you come up with something better. I'll name my first kid after you . . . wherever he or she is.
