I'm Coming Back From The BI Today.
Originally posted by philsfan View PostSVC at Mauna Loa and Kona Hawaiian Village are nice. I don't know if I would call them high end. HGVC at Waikoloa is 40 minutes from Kona. Bay Club at Waikoloa, too. Both are nice but I haven't stayed at either.
I would go back to the BI again and will plan to do so in 2012. In 2011 we will be on Maui.
Check our my slide show for pictures of the units and grounds at HGVC and the Bay Club, And I also posted the pictures of the grounds at Mauna Loa taken in 2005. We drove into Mauna Loa yesterday and the grounds look like my 2005 pictures.

HGVC@Waikoloa is the 'high end'. But it really depends on what you want. This place if beautiful and new and in great shape and run well. We stayed there two years ago and the family loved it.
Bay Club is worn out but being refurbished.
We have stayed at Paniolo Greens and it is far from the water and adequate but nothing special.
All of the above are in Waikoloa. We like to stay one week in Waikoloa and one week in Kona to cut down on our 'commute' as the island is big and the traffic can be bad.
In Kona we have stayed at the following and none of them are 'high end' if you use HGVC as the marker for high end.
Wyndham Royal Sea Cliff in Kailua Kona - we were able to get ocean view on a higher floor in a refurbished unit but we stayed at HGVC the week before and my kids never let me hear the end of it.....they have become timeshare snobs. It was just fine for me and my wife. The staff was great.
Kona Coast Resort II - we got a top floor (second floor) two bedroom and it was nice and the family liked it (we had not stayed at the HGVC before). It was a bit worn but they should have had a refurbishment done by now. Far off ocean view unit.
Wyndham Mauna Loa Village - we got a top floor middle unit. The unit was huge but it definately needed to be refurbished. They were scheduled to refurbish it and I am not sure if it was done yet or not. This place was acceptable and the family liked it but it was pre HGVC. Shell Vacations also has many units in this complex."If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.... If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed."

I can't speak for other resorts but the Kona Hawaiian Village that we stayed at for 2 weeks Oct 2009 was excellent. Plenty of organised daily activities on the resort, and also within a 15 minute walk of town and good restaurants. A really nice spacious 2 bedroom unit (17A) which we were lucky to get a good view from the Lanai. The only downside is it's a drive from a decent beach, despite only being 50 yards away from the sea front.

The Waikoloa area is closest to the best beaches on the island along the Kohala Coast. The beaches there are many and are fantastic.
Originally posted by LuanneDue to the formation of the Big Island and all of the lava, there are fewer "decent" (meaning swimming) beaches than on some of the other islands. None of the timeshares are on swimming beaches, or really on any beaches."If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be....
