We have two kids, ages 9 and 11. Would you pick Cliffs at Princeville or Lawai Beach? I'm leaning towards Lawai even though my exchange fees for it would be a bit higher.

Lawai is near a beach
and has 3 pool areas, plus it is in Poipu. The Cliffs units are nicer, they have 2 baths, but the pool area isn't as nice as the 3 at Lawai, it is in Princeville, so if you are going during the summer, when the northshore beaches are the calm ones, it would be a much short drive to Ke'E or tunnels, Hanalei Bay, etc.
Does that help?

Yes it does help. Thanks. We are planning on a summer trip. I know I have heard that Princeville is not good in the winter and the beaches are much better in the summer. Does the opposite hold true? Would we not want to stay in Poipu in the summer as the water would be too rough or is Poipu always swimmable?

The storms come from the north in the winter
making the northshore waves up to 50 ft. The reverse happens during the summer, the storm surge comes from the winter storms in the southern hemisphere causing rough seas on the south end.
We have stayed in both, and they both have their pluses. A lot depends on what you are planning for activites. If it is mostly hanging out around the resort pools etc the Lawai wins. If however you are going snorkeling, or enjoying the great beaches, the the Cliffs is the best.
You can't go wrong with either, but for summer, I would think the Princeville location would be better.

You will need to drive
to get to the good beaches, I think you can go down the hill a few blocks away to Queens Bath, but it isn't a beach.

If you're looking for something fun for the family
I highly recommend a kayak/hike trip up the Wailua river. We signed up at the Shell station (or it was at the time; this was a few years ago) in Wailua. It included an approx. 1-hour paddle up the river where we docked and hiked back to a waterfall. Nothing there that a 9-yo couldn't handle."Because there is good, and there is evil, and evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I shall not compromise in this."-- Rorschach, Watchmen

I haven't stayed at either of those resorts, but we did stay in Poipu at the Point at Poipu with our then 2 year old son in August a couple of years ago. The beaches were very swimable while we were there and we did love our resort. But, we visited the North side of the island for a day and found that we loved it there. It was just beautiful. We found some amazing snorkeling there and great beaches. If we visit Kauai again we would try to stay on the North side.

We did the same trip and it was great. We also highly recommend it as my 10 yr old and 5 yr old loved it and talked about it as the highlight of the trip.

You will be fine in either location during the summer. The best snorkeling is on the north side in our opinion. We will also be going to Princeville this summer for two weeks."If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.... If you can't do two weeks, I would choose Princeville for summer but plan on driving to beaches/snorkeling spots. We stayed in Princeville (at Hanalei Bay) during our only stay on Kauai. It was summer, and it was fantastic. I'd go back and do the same again, even though we haven't stayed in the south side.
Be sure to book a boat trip along the coast - breathtaking.
I think if I had one week and wanted to see the best of both north and side, I'd choose the area midway in between - I think it is Kapa'a -- you could choose a different destination each day from there.

Although, frankly, Poipu isn't far from half-way if you're going up to the state park."Because there is good, and there is evil, and evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I shall not compromise in this."-- Rorschach, Watchmen
