  • Island hopping

We plan to be on Oahu for a few days, then do inter-island hops somewhat like this:

    2 travelers, multi-city (36 days, 35 nights)
Total airfare, taxes and fees: $ 674.40

Sun, Mar 28 Depart: 5:22 am Honolulu/Oahu, HI (HNL) Hawaiian Airlines 106

Arrive: 5:58 am Kahului/Maui, HI (OGG)

Sun, Apr 11 Depart: 7:43 am Kahului/Maui, HI (OGG) Hawaiian Airlines 115
    1 stop
Arrive: 9:26 am Kauai Island, HI (LIH) Hawaiian Airlines 303

Sun, Apr 25 Depart: 7:00 pm Kauai Island, HI (LIH) Hawaiian Airlines 554
    1 stop
Arrive: 8:43 pm Kona/Big Island, HI (KOA) Hawaiian Airlines 398

Sun, May 2 Depart: 7:01 am Kona/Big Island, HI (KOA) Hawaiian Airlines 217

Arrive: 7:43 am Honolulu/Oahu, HI (HNL)

That's four flights with Hawaiian Airlines resulting in a round trip. Questions:

    1) Will bag fees apply for each flight? I think, YES.

    2) Are there better ways of hopping to all islands? Like, do you know of less expensive ways? (I believe this figures out to $84.30 + bag fees per segment.)

    3) How best to book rental cars to cover all islands? Does anyone know a rental company that works with you to minimize cost for 36 days of rental?
I guestimate an extra $1000 for the individual island rentals.

    1) Depending on the number of bags you need to check, if one of you joins Hawaiian Airlines Premier Club then two checked pieces of luggage for EVERYONE (up to 6 passengers) booked on the SAME reservation are free.

Hawaiian Airlines : HawaiianMiles Premier Club - Designed for Frequent Flyers

    2) We are in Hawaii 5 Dec 2009 - 27 Mar 2010 for five islands. I often used Hawaii Car Rentals from $108/wk - Cheap & Discount Hawaii Rental Cars - Maui, Kauai, Honolulu and Big Island Locations to reserve in advance. Then about a week before needing a car I used Priceline..com's "Name your own Price."

Oahu cost $10 per day for 22 days, Big Island $10 per day for 7 days, Kauai $14 per day, Maui was $18. All were mid size or compact cars. Taxes are a substantial additional cost for renting cars.

    3) RE: "Are there better ways of hopping to all islands? Like, do you know of less expensive ways?" From Maui you can take a ferry to Molokai. We rode mules down 26 switchbacks and over 1600 feet sea cliffs in Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Molokai - Leper Colony. Kalaupapa National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service) & Tour: The Kalaupapa National Historical Park and Guided Mule Tour

You can also take a ferry to Lanai from Molokai.

    Hope this is helpful.

Roberto, I had no idea you had planned to go to Hawaii with Carol. I can't give you any help with the prep but if you have any room left in your luggage I'd love to go and keep y'all company~~ shaggy

          I figure 1 bag each for 4 flights, so 8 bags times $10. That's $80.
What does the Premier Club cost? $188 I beleive.

If that is correct, we would be paying $108 for head of line and lounge priviledges. And no Black Out dates. What else do we get? Are fares discounted?

Good hint. Thanks for the reply.

Yes!!! This tour Caroll is up to going. No camping! No 13000 driven miles!

For our 50th, we wanted something a bit out of the ordinary:
We thought of narrow boats from Holland to Prague. No good prices when the weather is to be warm (August is best).

Thought maybe Tuscany, Rome, to Amalfi Coast. Too much walking and hills and very pricey!!!

We decided laid back relaxing in nice weather with no currency or language exchanges. By working the flight schedules, hopefully we can afford at least six weeks on 3 islands at least. May just skip Oahu and stay Maui for a month.
