  • Mountain Top Attire

Hope to catch a sunrise from atop the volcano? In packing for Maui, what is needed to stay warm up there in early morning. I can not afford to allow Caroll to become chilled.

Also of concern, does she need her oxygen tank while up there? She usually uses it at night but not at all during the day.

I wasn't there for the sunrise, so it was relatively warm when we got there.

However, as a relatively fit person, and DH is a runner, we definitely found the altitude a challenge when we tried to do some walking. I'd bring the oxygen tank.

      Health and Safety Concerns

      Summit
The high altitude at the summit area may complicate health conditions
& cause breathing difficulties. Those with respiratory or heart conditions
should consult their doctors prior to traveling to high elevations.

I'd be very concerned about taking her up to almost 10,000 feet if she needs oxygen. My mother isn't allowed to go higher than 2,500 feet for any length of time (granted, she's on oxygen all the time).

As for what to take/wear, expect it to be cold. We've done the sunrise twice. If Caroll takes a chill easily, wear a couple of layers, including gloves/mittens, a hat, and a coat over the top. Take along a blanket.

Now I need to check with the tank provider about altitude and temperature.

I think blankets will help for staying warm. How much hiking is required for viewing sunrise or set from up top? Can the viewing be done from the warm car? Just grabbing at straws here rather than google for everything.

There are escourted tours that drive people up there and provide jackets and I believe hot chocolate, too. I haven't done this, but it should be amazing. The tour operators should be a help. As I recall, they pickup at around 4 am from the resort areas to get there in time. Hiking seemed minimal, just don't fall asleep at the wheel if you drive yourselves as 4am is like 1 or 2 am in CA. Hope you go and enjoy it!

We dressed very warmly and I still envied the people that had their blankets along. Next time, I'll do the same. I was SOOOO cold in June.

Very little hiking required because you can park at the top but you need to walk a little bit to get to the hut inside as it is too cold. We have done it once and it wasn't worth it. It is spectacular if the conditions are right but that may not happen too often. You need warm clothes and warms socks and a hat for sure. It can be very windy and then it is really cold. Also, if you do it on your own, you need to go early as there will be many people doing the same thing and you will not be able to park there or stand inside.

What we do now is look from our condo if the mountain is clear and then drive up on the spur of the moment. You should be able to do that from the Maui Schooner too. We like to drive up in the afternoon and stay for sunset instead. It is a beautiful drive! You will like it. The up country is really pretty and so different from the beach.

PS. Take your "Golden Age Passport" with you from the National Parks because you need it.

PPS. I noticed that you got my email as I see your requests in "Be on the Lookout For....." I hope that you will succeed.
