  • Is Thrifty ok at HNL?

They had the best rate on Carrentals.com for my Dad's trip but I know there are problems with certain rental outfits on at least one other island - I would like to set Dad up to be as hassle free as possible.

Whenever we were in the islands we used either Budget or Thrifty....but we always always took photos of the car at time of pick up and at drop off to insure no hassles.

Also we were sure to inspect all aspects of the car thoroughly....reporting any scratches and scrapes to the agent, insisting it be initialed and marked on our copy of the agreement.

There used to be plenty of reports about companies saying cars had damage after a person turned them over. Don't know if it still happens.

We took photos of mileage, clock, under the front and back bumpers as well as interior and exterior photos.

We did it in clear view of the agents, so they knew we had evidence of the car's condition.

We never heard about any claims being made after we dropped off the car.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

I had no problem with them when we used Thrifty last year.

Check about age restrictions - I know in Aruba some rental companies cut off at 75 years.

              try www.csaa.com

When I last went to HNL and Lihue and Kona, I went on line with AAA and when you hit other selections when Hertz comes up, there is a list of six major car rentals. I have found that they will flucuate as for the dates you submit and will also change as you get closer to the target date. I mad my reservations through that site and don't recall ever having to produce my AAA card. I used dollar and budget for my rentals last year for our full-size cars. They had to upgrade us at HNL with the Chrysler LHS(I think it was, or maybe a 300), and at Kona they also ran out and gave us a sportier Pontiac G6, which was just fine for 2 of us and they knocked $100 off the weeklong rental. They charged us an extra $9.00 for being an hour or so late, but that's ok. We've had pretty good luck with our Hawaii car rentals over the last 6 years!

Oh, no! That would really be a problem. I will check - thank you for mentioning.

eta: Thrifty says that in the US there is no maximum age restriction as long as presenting a valid driver's license. Still, worth noting for other destinations.

I met people on a ferry from UK to Ireland in 2008 who had to travel with an escorted group because they were not allowed to rent a car due to age. I think the limit was 75.

I think this is a concern in many places now.
