  • Marriott - Which one?

I have a week booked at Kauai Beach Club in a 1bd for June 30th...
Would it be worth an extra exchange fee to swithc last minute, if possible.. and stay at the newer Marriott?

It's only the two of us

With only the two of you I say you are just fine at the Kauai Beach Marriott....we were there with 5 in a one-bedroom and very happy. Why spend the extra money......just go another time to the Whysohigh.

It is real nice but so is the Kauai Beach....plus you have a better shot at an ocean view room in the KBC vs. the Whysohigh. I have been to both...sure I would first pick the Whysohigh since they are newer and purpose built and right on Poipu beach....but honestly I would be just as happy at the KBC. I would take that extra money and go horseback riding on the beach.

          Cool, thanks for the info.

We booked a flight back to Oahu with those cheap InterIsland fares.. so we can go to Pearl Harbor ..
We figured the kids would be bored.. and we doubt we'll go back to Oahu anytime soon.

If you like peace and quiet, Poipu is where it's at.

We were in 8306 last time we were there. The parking lot we used is under the pools and streams and landscaping.

Which beach is better for swimming? Also will there be waves at either during the summer?

Poipu (MAW) is protected by a reef IIRC. I haven't been to KBC. I snorkeled at 100 ft from the villas for a number of hours at different tidal levels with no issues. I didn't even miss not having fins until coming in from pretty far out (150 yards or so). Only bad thing, and I find it pervasive in the islands, is that tourists tend to swim and then stand up in the shallow water, damaging and killing the coral. I had to swim out to the reef to really see anything decent, although I got some decent fish pictures closer in. The water near shore was murky most of the time, but I still had a good time. Great for swimming and sunbathing. The resort bar is just above beach level and there are outdoor showers.

We were there in October, so I don't know about tides/waves in summer.

My sense from talking to others is that KBC is more for families with kids and MAW is more for couples/adults. I found it very peaceful at Poipu. I never found the pools crowded, even though they're pretty small, and we could often walk the resort in the morning and not see anyone outside. We spent most of our time up in Waimea Canyon and down toward Barking Sands, so Poipu really worked well. If going more to Lihue and up to Princeville, KBC might be better located.

I think I had a live thread from during our stay (in 2004) on the old Marriott forum, but it got pruned IIRC. Another TUG'er was across the hall in Hale 8 but I didn't know until the day they checked out. Never saw them

Can't go wrong at either place

                  Dave,

Have you been to Kauai before? Is so, then you know that the KBC is about centrally located on the island. So, you can go in either direction for the day without a lot of driving. Do you have a 1br, 2 bath villa? We had that and it worked out great. Their kitchen space is limited from what I remember. Small mircrowave, dorm sized fridge and a small bar sink. There's several good restaurants in the area that you can just walk to. Duke's is great, have heard good reports on the Italian place there and we liked Keoki's. Plus, when you get tired of the high prices at the Marriott, you can walk over to the Kalapaki Beach Hut for a great breakfast or ostrich burger.

                  The pool is magnificent.

Having said this, I really do want to stay at the WhysoHigh!

Be careful thinking you will be going to Maui next. That Kauai bug is mighty hard for us to get rid of!

                  Aloha

I vote for KBC. We own there and really love it. I do want to try the other resort but have not been able to do so yet.
