Air Fares To Maui?

I have been watching air fare from Sacramento to Maui non stop for Jan 7 to Jan 21, 2011.

On Sunday the best price was $554 with Alaska Air. Yesterday the air fare went up to $814. All air fares to Hawaii went up on all air lines yestereday.

What happen to cause this much of an increase?

It is purely an equation. They have some formula that says that at 8 months out (or whatever), they shoudl have sold 18% of the seats. 30% by 6 months out.....50% by 3 months out....80% by 45 days out.....etc. They move the prices up and down depending on what it takes to make that goal. So, they must have sold more seats than was expected for this far out...so they raised the prices. If they continue to sell seats at the higher prices, then you are in trouble. Hopefully, the increase in prices will slow down the sales (basic economic theory) and they will come back down to make sure they hit the next sales deadline. Start a Fare Alert on Kayak or other web site and watch it daily or weekly. I have one going now for April 2011 and it is sitting at $740/person. Too high to dive in now.
