  • Maui question...

My brother and his wife are going to Hawaii for the very first time. They will be spending part of their vacation with us on Oahu and the Big Island. They would also like to spend 3-4 nights on Maui.

Can anyone suggest a hotel () or somewhere, and which area they should think about staying?

I have not been to Maui in many years, so am no help to them.

    Thank you!!

I'm not really a "Maui expert" even though we do own a timeshare there.

For someone's first visit to Maui I would probably recommend the Kaanapili, Kahala area. We own on the other side of the island in Kihei, but that area isn't for everyone. By staying on the Lahaina/Kaanapali side there is more to do in that area. I don't have any hotel suggestions as I've never stayed in a hotel there. I've always loved the Hyatt (or at least the lobby, ) but don't know what the rooms are like. Hopefully you'll get some other input.

I can recommend the Aston Kaanapali from about 10 years ago, but I don't know if they do other than package deals. It is next door to the Kaanaplai Beach Club and a short walk down the beach/boardwalk to Dukes Resturant ( great breakfasts). Less expensive rental units are to the North of there. The hotel row in Kaanaplai is nice but expensive. Best shopping is in Lahaina Front Street or Whalers Village in Kaanapali. A car is just about required to get around. Hope this helps.

        In Lahaina

There is a cute little place right at the south end of town called the Lahaina Shores

Maui Resorts | Hawaii Condo | Classic Resorts: Lahaina Shores Beach Resort, Lahaina, Maui, HI where you can get a suite that is ocean front.

Walking distance to the strip and all that is Lahaina, free parking, mini fridge, etc. Much better than a Hotel out in Kaanapali imho.

The Mahana is nice...floor to ceiling windows and oceanfront. If it's just the 2 of them they could even get a studio unit. These are condos.

AS mentioned my Tommy-the other condos in that area Aston Ka'anapali Shores and Maui Ka'anapali Villas are equally nice. I feel like the Mahana caters a little more to the adult side since there are more grounds/pools at the other two locations.

Aston Mahana at Kaanapali - Discounted Rates

You also search VRBO for private owners..but you would have to weigh the short time frame with a possible cleaning fee etc-might be easier to just use an actual rental agency or Aston direct.

The Royal Lahaina was completely redone a couple of years ago. Always voted Maui's "Most Hawaiian Hotel" Nice grounds and I think they also hold a luau there as well.

            | Royal Lahaina Resort | Oceanfront on Kaanapali Beach Maui Hawaii

They are also the chain type hotels in Ka'anapali-maybe they have hotel points?

The Wailea area is very nice as well...it's just past Kihei which Luanne mentioned. Four Seasons is there plus the Grand Waliea..another Marriott and a couple other nice hotels. Most are pricey-so it depends on their budget.

Hope that helps..great trip they have planned.

The wife and I took an Alaska Airlines Vacations deal (RT airfare for 2, 5 nights in the Aston Kannapoli Shores, and base rate economy car rental) last December. I put our extra money into a car rental versus choosing a garden or beach view. We wound up in a 8th floor penthouse near the canal and even had a beach view. Package deal cost us $1715 last year. We took that because I couldn't get into our timeshare there. Had a great time and are going back this November for a 15 night stint in our timeshare in Kehei.

However, Kannapoli is our favorite place on the island so far. We plan on exploring Wailea and snorkeling this time.

Last year to fill our 2 day gap, I put in a bid for at least a 4 star hotel and $99 per night and got Royal Lahaina. The rooms were very nice as was the location. Great snorkeling right off the hotel - and then down south a little ways to Black Rock. The entry from the shore was a little steep, but doable.

The rooms are small - but then we had just checked out of the huge rooms at Sands of Kahana - so maybe they weren't THAT small.

Wasn't that the Maui Prince at one time? They have a beautiful beach in front of them. It pays to bid as I read fantastic rates by so many people who know how to do this.

We like the area of Wailea and Makena even better than Ka'anapali Beach because you have nice beaches and coves but there are no timeshares there. The closest one is the Maui Lea at Maui Hill.

Emmy, the Royal Lahaina would be in the Lahaina area I'd think. The Maui Prince is now the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. We drove by it when we were there. We were told the hotel never even closed, just went from one name to the other. The beach in front of that hotel is the one we've gone to for years. We were going there even before there was ever a hotel.

You are right Luanne. I was thinking of the Makena Beach Hotel and the beach over there. We still like that area better because it isn't so busy but it may be different in other seasons as we never go in the summer.

We haven't been to Maui in the summer for years, but it used to be quieter on the Kihei/Wailea/Makena side. The only times we noticed a lot of traffic was when there was construction going on. Then in the afternoon all of the workers would be streaming out of that area.

When we were on Maui last May, Kihei was extremely busy. About as busy as Lahaina. As you got closer to Wailea, things calmed down a bit.

A lot of the congestion seemed to be caused by people darting across the majory street through Kiehei to get to the beach on the other side.

I like Kihei. It has the same kind of funky vibe of the drag in Austin or Mount Hood in Oregon. Kind of retro and laid back.

Where as Lahaina seemed more like North Dallas. Alot of people shopping. Although there were some cool places in Lahaina, too. I really liked the plate lunch restaurant next door to the Old Lahaina Luau.

                              Love Maui

You do know this thread is about 6 months old??

Have you guys been to Maui before? I just got back and since you are going to be there during Whale season, I would recommend finding time to go out for an afternoon cruise. We were there just before season started and we saw a whale breaching when we were coming back from our snorkel trip. The detail of the whale are are on
We used these guys for our snorkel trip and the crew was fun and the boat was really comfortable.
