  • Thinking of going to Maui-need a little guidance

I have a chance to attend a week long stock market trading-training session at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua in Maui. It will be Dec 5-9, but it is only half days in the morning giving me noon and on for myself. No DW so I can do whatever I want, when I want.

Since I have never really thought of going to HI before, I am asking for your experience to help me out with some questions.

    1) With the discount rate, the hotel would cost me about $250/day. Is there a resort very close by? I think the hotel is at Kapalua. I am thinking exchange, but may be too late already for those dates.

    2) With a half day off each day, what does it take to get to The Arizona Memorial? Is this something I can do in an afternoon? That is really the only thing on my 'must do' list.

    3) I would probably do some touristy things if they are close to wherever I end up. Do I need to get a car, or is there shuttles?

    4) Do I need to see the other islands? If so, how much am I going to see in an afternoon?

Sorry for some basic questions, but if I do this training session, I want to get signed up for it before flight prices go up.

The Arizona isn't on Maui, so that's not going to be possible unless you fly into or leave from Honolulu and schedule the time. There are always crowds, so you can't just say, "I have a few minutes, I'll run over." You have to buy a ticket with a specific time on it and wait for your ticket time to be called. If you see The Missouri, which is right beside the Memorial, you can easily spend all day in the area. I didn't much care whether we saw The Missouri or not, but it proved to be fascinating.

Any timeshare in Lahaina or Kaanapali will be within 5 miles or so, 10 at the most. Sands of Kahana is 2.5 miles so that means Kaanapali Beach resort is about 3 or 4.

Many touristy activities will pick you up at your hotel/timeshare, however many of those things are full day activities.

If you don't have a full day you should not consider visiting other islands, in my opinion.

Flight prices are high now. Fall prices usually drop in August in my experience.

West Maui is all close, TPI shows a Hotel unit that fits your dates. You are planning on renting a car right?

Not going to happen, the tours start in the early am and the tickets are normally sold out by 10 am. You will need to spend a night on Oahu to get to this attraction.
        3) I would probably do some touristy things if they are close to wherever I end up. Do I need to get a car, or is there shuttles?
It is all relatively close but you will need a car.
        4) Do I need to see the other islands? If so, how much am I going to see in an afternoon?
I don't see this working as the airport waits and the flights, time to and from the airport would allow you less than 1 hour on another island.

          Great information and very helpful.
Guess no Arizona this trip. If I go, I'll just look for girls in grass skirts.

I really hope they don't dance like the turtle.

You'll need to hit a luau to find girls in grass skirts, and I can't say the turtle is that far off....

You should be able to find a timeshare - think about HTSE, TPI, SFX

Sounds like a great excuse to go. Spend the whole week and you'll have three full free days. If you want to see the Arizona, fly through HNL. But I would fly direct in and out of Maui if you have the choice and save the Arizona for a seminar in HNL

              Vintner,

Are you a member of II? There is a 1bd unit at The Gardens of West Maui sitting in II right now that fits your dates. This small resort is right where you need to be..very close to Kapalua..there is not even a mile between the two. Get it!!!

It is just not my style to deposit my week with one or two exchange companies in hopes something will show up for the exchange. I need a specific time in a certain location and they can not be sure I can get that. So on goes my search.

I have been checking priceline, expedia, orbitz, costco. Costco get too high because of their flights. Even when I choose a cheaper flight, the other guys will beat it.

I found a resort on RCI that I like and could rent, but the same resort is cheaper on priceline.

I found a car on expedia cheaper than the package deals from any of the sites.

I have made a spreadsheet to log in the resort name, features, prices, etc.
Finding the good deal is part of the challenge of the trip.

In that case, why not book air when you find a good deal, and then wait for a last minute bonus week/getaway? Live dangerously, it's thrilling! Seriously, with those dates I'd bet you'd do just fine. Book the cheapest cancelable place as a backup for cushion if you need it

                    Do something last minute?

Actually, that is a very good idea. Book something I could live with and maybe find something for an exchange or a better rate. Hmm. I'll check into this more. Thanks for the suggestion.

It is now less than a month before my trip to Maui.
I am there a Saturday-Saturday, but the first day I won't get in until dinner time. With a 14 hour trip, I won't do anything the first day.

I have Sunday open and will be by myself, and have the afternoons open where I could be alone or with a couple other classmates.

I have been reading old threads here and on other sites to look for the suggestions for the must do items. What do I need to do or see on that open Sunday? How about afternoons, again, likely by myself?

My normal style would be to go back to the resort and do nothing, so I am trying to break out of my comfort zone and actually do something.
