Adding that if you do decide to make an overnight of it to go to VNP....I've got this place bookmarked. **Disclaimer** I know nothing about it...never stayed there...but it's in my places for future reference. I think it looks like a great place.

RE Big Island Volcano: be advised that the volcano IS currently erupting and it WILL affect your touring plans. Although no lava is visible in the Kilauea caldera, there is a rift and there are noxious gasses coming out. We just got back and found about 4/4 of the rim drive closed off because of the poisonous gas. However, you still can get to the visitor's center and view part of the rim. Also, the Chain of Craters scenic drive down to sea level is open. We found we could not net to any molten lava flows w/o hiking over old (cold) flows, which is extremely slow and exhausting.

This has been one of the most incredible vacations. Our week on the Big Island is flying by. We have taken several of the the suggestions and I wanted to thank everyone for making this a trip chock full of highlights! :grouphug:

          Hi Lawren,
We took the guided trip to the top of Mauna Kea and had a wonderful time.

            Hi Lawren,
We are on Maui and leaving tomorrow. We found this little place called Eskimo Candy in Kihei. It's a fish market type of restaurant and it has the best poki. Very affordable too. Should be pretty close to where you are.

BTW, we are at WKORVN and the snorkeling here has been fantastic. Hope you have a chance to try it.
Have a great time in Maui! Wish we overlapped and could meet up.

If you haven't gone to Maui yet, I would recommend the snorkeling too. It is one of my highlights as well as whale watching but they have left for this year. You need to come back in the spring, Lawren.

Did you go to Captain Cook's monument to snorkel on the Big Island and star watching on Mauna Kea? You like the beach and there are many to choose from in Maui.

For a change, we like to go upcountry and drive to the Haleakala Crater. It is spectacular and you can see the Island of Hawaii on a clear day from the top. We met a couple who went on the sunrise tour and they had a perfect sunrise that morning but you can do it on your own. It is extremely cold, if it is windy, so you need warm clothes in layers. This couple showed me their pictures. We have never been that lucky yet so go later in the day and it is still a beautiful drive.

The road to Hana is a must see too. What a pity that you will miss LisaH.

Lawren, did you go to Volcano National Park? I am trying to figure out if I could go there for a day without staying overnight while staying in Waikoloa.

Lisa, I am SO SORRY I missed you!

                      Presley,

Yes we did VNP and I highly recommend it. The petroglyphs near the base of Chain of Crater was my personal favorite. The rim road was still blocked off.

From Waikoloa I would strongly suggest the Saddle Road. It is how we came back. Newly paved and you'll be up near Hilo in about 90 minutes.

                        Lawren,

Where were you on Big Island? I was at Kingsland May 18-23. Was going to stay longer and go to Maui after but my Mom went into the hospital so cut the trip short.

I did the long way and stayed till the glow.. If you go via Hilo, have dinner or lunch at Ken's Pancake House. It was on the top 10 places to have breakfast and the only other one I have been to is Cafe du Monde.
Traveling Broadens the mind and I want to do more French Quarter Fest in New Orleans is my favourite festival

I was reading today that it has been very hot on Maui. Lawren, are you on Maui now? Is there a breeze? I hope so and are you enjoying your stay there?
