I like both Kona and Waikoloa. Waikoloa is closer to the nicer beaches. My daughter and son in law spent some time in Kona at the Kona Coast in March (which is not really right in town) and said next time they wanted to be in Waikoloa. They'll be spending two weeks at the Bay Club next year.
Yes, that's true, I suppose, in a classic "beautiful beach" sense. I preferred the rugged lava coast (more unusual) and actually found some gorgeous hidden beaches near Kona, but we needed a 4x4 to do the offroading to get there. We also really loved the snorkeling near Kona (including the night dive/snorkel with the manta rays).

My first experience with a Hawaiian beach was in 1968 when I went to Hawaii with my parents. Our first stay was at the Mauna Kea, which was the only resort in that area of the island. When I walked out onto that beach, I was in love. And remember I grew up in southern California and had been to the beach a lot.
