  • The Road to Hana

We drove the road to Hana, otw known as Hana Highway, yesterday. WOW, what a ride!! I know many people do it in a day, leaving West Maui in the early morning and returning in the evening. We spent the night in a cottage in Hana so we could go Power Hang Gliding in the morning on Tuesday.

There is so much to do around Hana, we could have stayed three days. If we ever return, we will stay at least that long.

We did several of the stops along the way recommended in Maui Revealed. Ching's Pond was great fun. It was Cold but refreshing, and several local guys were jumping in from the bridge above. The best stop we made was at Venus Pools, a little ways past Hana. It was beautiful and uncrowded (perhaps due to the No Trespassing sign and the barbed wire fence, neatly opened to allow people to duck through in one spot). We were told by several locals that the owner put the sign up for liability reasons, and that the only guests they object to are people who litter and (gasp) get naked. The boys loved this spot, there were several high spots from which to safely jump into a very deep natural pool.

Hana itself was incredible. Like a beautiful place frozen in time (somewhere b/t 1950 and 1970 depending on where you are).

We went power hang gliding out of the Hana Airport with Armin from Hang Gliding Maui (also mentioned in Maui Revealed). It was truly spectacular, we all loved it. I couldn't believe how breathtaking the water/coastline was from up there, and how many waterfalls there are in the area (it is really something to see them all lined up down the mountain in so many places). We even touched the clouds! Armin was great, the boys (all three) each got a bit of a 'thrill' ride, and I got a nice, easy, sightseeing ride.

My most important tip: GAS UP YOUR CAR BEFORE YOU GET OUT OF KAHULUI!!! There is no gas on the road to Hana, and THE ONLY GAS STATION IN HANA WAS OUT OF ALL TYPES OF GAS ON MONDAY EVENING. Our Sebring convertible used a half-tank going one way. Ok w/us, we had enough to get back and were spending the night anyway, but the unfortunate couple we ran into at the general store was most upset. Seems the station often runs out of regular, but this time they were out of everything. DH went back this morning to fill up 'just in case,' and paid $4.29 per Gallon for regular (would that win the 'how much does gas cost where you live' contest? I bet it might).

Another tip: Go to the bar at the Hotel Hana Maui on a Monday evening to catch LeoKane Pryor. Bring something halfway decent to wear, this is not your typical Hawaiian ‘beachwear is ok’ place. Check with the hotel to see when he’s playing before planning your trip to Hana, he plays there regularly and will be there Mondays in the short term, but may be doing other nights as well, perhaps with different bandmates. This was a super treat of classic Hawaiian traditional music, performed by three incredible singers/players. LeoKane is a classically trained opera singer, with a great stage presence and fantastic voice (he plays the ukelele, too!). We saw him perform with two other musicians, a guitarist and an upright bass player. All three had incredible voices and they did great harmonies. We also were treated to some great Hula by a few different dancers. Try to pack a cooler and eat in your cottage or be prepared for a hefty food bill at the bar (food was good, though). Also beware that the General Store closes at 7 on weekdays and 6 on Sunday, and the Hotel Hana may be the only place open for dinner depending on the night.

And another: If you decide to spend the night in Hana (I urge you to do so), consider saving the Sacred Pools for the following morning (if you’re not hang gliding with Armin . We didn’t get there until around 3 and the parking lot was so full we didn’t bother. Most people make that their last stop after driving since early morning, so it’s really crowded in the afternoon.

We never made it to Red Sand Beach, Hamoa Beach, and a few other spots. We could easily have spent a few more days (or years).

Avery, it sounds like you had a fantastic day. The hang gliding must be very exciting and seeing the beautiful scenery from the air. Do you go a distance and is it easy to get a spot to land?

I looked it up and from the photos I saw it looks to me like you are doing it by yourself. Were you not scared in the beginning? Tell us more when you are back home.

      Emmy,

The distance depends on the time you book. We each had 45 minutes, and we covered some ground, I don't know how much. Flights are usally 1/2 hour or an hour, but we shared 2 hours and 2 half-hours so we each got 45 minutes. Landing is easy, it is at the Hana Airport on the runway. I was NOT in it alone!! Armin, the owner/instructor, is flying/controlling the trike (or Ultra Light) and the passenger is sitting behind him. The seat works much like a motorcycle with a seat behind the driver, but I didn't have to hold him around his waist

It was really a beautiful experience.

We were just there last month and loved it all over again. We didn't stop as often as we did the first time, but we did stop in different places. We took the road all the way back and the narrow road around the curves had us a little scared. The locals are kinda road hogs, so you had to worry that one would be on the other side, in the middle of the road.

I loved doing the circle tour - continuing on the road from Hana. To me the vistas were unforgettable. And the roads were not that bad, although I am familiar driving back roads so maybe I shouldn't give my input.

Thanks for the tip on hangliding. Next time we are on Maui......

Avery, thanks for sharing in so much detail. I had to laugh about the Sebring convertible...we also rented one of those for our recent trip to Washington state and Vancouver Island, just to be able to enjoy the vistas and filling our lungs with clean air!

As you might recall, I'm planning a trip to Hawaii...our third in about 10 years, but what the heck. We have two kinda-piggybacked weeks, the first on the Big Island, with two nights "off", then a week at Maui Sunset. I'm thinking it would be a fine idea (now that you've inspired me!) to spend those two "off nights" between timeshares, up there in Hana. I haven't been there since '83 and frankly I'm thrilled to hear it still looks like a place "frozen in time". I can't wait to go...so thanks for getting me so excited!

Avery, when you have a spare moment, would you mind pm'ing me links (or post em here, whatever) of some places to stay for those two nights in Hana? I'm actually inviting friends, a young couple who're very spiritual, to go with us to Hawaii, so I'll need that info for them as well, should they decide to join us when the time comes. We have space for them on Big Island since we have a 2 br, but not so sure about Maui Sunset which is a 4/2. My friends have a son who'll be about 3 by that trip time, in Nov 07...it would be against the rules for the three of them to stay with us at Maui Sunset, methinks.

Thanks for any lodging recommendations you might provide us. And a big mahalo again for your delightful review! (I looked for a hula dancer smiley but dancing banana will have to do!)

                  Carol,

We stayed at the Hana Kai Maui. I would stay there again, but heed the following: This place is also 'frozen in time,' so the furniture is original circa 1965-1970. All the brass handles, doorknobs, etc. have that green/white 'salty' effect. There is no a/c, no telephone, no tv (made for a great game of cards after returning from entertainment at Hotel Hana Maui). It was clean, though I did see a few small bugs on the floor. What worked for us was it was a one-bedroom suite with two twins in the living room for the kids (covered in vintage hawaiian fabric, also circa 1970). There was a full kitchen (no dishwashser). There is a pocket door b/t the bedroom and living room. The lanai was big and looked out on a great black sand beach in Hana Bay. We slept with the windows open and I was up listening to the sound of the surf much of the night (it didn't bother me, it was wonderful, but it was loud!). There was a great breeze and we slept with a light blanket. If you stay there, pay for an oceanfront room, it's worth the upgrade. The manager told me some people even sleep on the lanai.

There are a few other choices in Hana, but book early. I waited until 3 weeks prior and had limited selection. The Hotel Hana Maui would be incredible I bet, but rooms are pricey.

Here's a good link, but be sure to get some pics before booking. Joe's rentals looked gross.

Avery thanks for all the detail. I was just looking at availability at the Hana Kai when I remembered that someone had stayed there so I did a search and found your thread.

I would really love to stay in Hana as we will have a night or two between stays around either Christmas or New Years. Problem we have booking is we are still trying to find the week in-between our Westin Maui check-out on Dec 26th and our Westin Maui check-in Jan 3rd '09. So we have no idea what nights we will need.

The power hang gliding sounds great. I hope we can pull this off. My wife so far says Hana is out of the question since she gets car sick but I am working on getting her to go and spending at least one night so there is not so much driving in one day.

                      Red,

Medicate wife. Get a convertible (helps with car sickness). Plan on plenty of stops, and definitely spend a night or two. I hope you get to go. There are quite a few B&B/cottage type places around, and there's always the hotel Hana Maui if you want to splurge.

John, the road isn't bad but there are many curves and one way bridges. Do the curves make her sick or is it a bad road? The road used to be bad but that was many years ago. I hope you can do it because the drive and hikes are very nice. There should be many waterfalls along the road during that time of the year too.

It looks like we are going to do two nights in Hana. Still not sure where yet but we plan to go horseback riding at Maui Stables since they are one of the only stables which will allow our 5 yr old son to ride.

And if we can it looks like my daughter and I will do the power hang gliding.

Now to see if the activities we want to do will be available when we want.
