Hotel for a Night in Lihue?

We will be arriving on Kauai the night before our check in. We will need a hotel for one night in Lihue.
I have found two:
Banyan Harbor Resort and Garden Island Inn Hotel.

Does anyone have any experiences with either one? Or have other suggestions?

In my years of searching RCI for Hawaii, Banyan Harbor has always been the most likely one to be available. As Kauai timeshares go it would be at the bottom of the list. But it would certainly be OK for one night.

We have been by it, it being on the opposite end of Lihue from the airport. Assuming you will get a rental car, it's not too far away.

I checked Hotwire, just sticking in 12/14 to have a date, and got hotels for $86 and $95 and condos from $165 to $369, most of them not in Lihue.

That makes sense since there are more resorts/condos than there are hotels and motels.

I believe that both Banyan Harbor and Garden Island Inn are located near each other, above the Nawiliwili Harbor. We stayed at the Garden Island Inn for one night in 1999, on our first trip to Hawai`i. It was ok - pretty much just a hotel room, not air conditioned.

I suggest, though, that you investigate B&Bs instead of hotel. Much better value - for the same money you can get a nicer room.

I can picture Banyan Harbor on the hill above Nawiliwili Bay. The road it's on continues south a bit and then turns back west to the main highway about where Gaylords and Grove Farms is.

You might check Shell Vacation Club for a nightly rental, probably in the Kapaa area, which is not far from the airport.

Yep - and that's where Garden Island Inn is located as well. As you are heading down the road you describe, GI Inn is visible on the right, just a bit further down the hill past the Marriott driveway.

We have the same situation, though we needed a two-night stay . . . We went through VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and found a 1 BR cottage in Kapaa, 20 minutes from Lihue, for $60 a night . . . If you check out the VRBO website, you can scroll down through all the owner rentals on Kauai, and click on those that have a nightly rate . . . I saw quite a few in the $75-$90 range . . . Many of them require a two or three night minimum stay and many also have a cleaning deposit of perhaps $50, which makes these places unsuitable for a short stay. But there were a few that might work.

Incidentally, we are Shell owners and their "Bonus nights", when available for owners, cost $100 per night . . . If you are not a Shell owner I would imagine the cost would be considerably more . . . Steve's suggestion about B & B's sounds like a good one, though they may have minimum stay requirements, too.

There are a few budget motels in Lihue, which I think I found on tripadvisor.com . . . Can't remember their names, but they were pretty basic and pretty cheap (under $50) and probably not your (or my) cup of tea . . . But you might try Trip Advisor just to get an idea.
