  • Honolulu, Oahu OR Kailua-Kona, Big Island

Okay, Aloha Airlines is having a sale to Hawaii and I'm trying to decide which island to visit. I'm looking at departing Saturday the 24th for four nights with my 13yr old daughter. I've read the reviews of both the following TS and they both received good ratings (Fairfield Hawai'i at Waikiki Beach Walk & Fairfield Hawai'i at Kona Hawaiian Resort). Because the first one was just built in Sept 06 I'm thinking of checking that one out. Any recommendations on which island to visit? HELP, need some feedback today.

What do you the weather is like at the end of February???

    Thanks in advance.

Personally I like the Big Island better. But, if you're only going to be there for 4 days, Oahu might be a better choice. But, it may all depend on what you want to do. Are you going to rent a car? Do you want to do much driving in order to be able to see as much as possible? Do you just want to kind of hang out at the beach and relax?

Which ever one has a direct flight and is the cheapest. With only four days I do not suggest having to go on any inter-island flights...those will eat up precious hours of your short vacation. You win either way....all are nice and have positives.

Actually hadn't even thought about renting a car, do you think I would need one? I like to site-see! Don't really care for hanging out at the beach. All of this is so sudden, I noticed a post about cheap tickets to Hawaii last night about 11pm and called FF this morning to check availability. So haven't thought through everything as of yet. But I want to explore.

If you go to the Big Island you would definitely need a car. You can probably do without one on Oahu. Lots more public transportation there, I remember there being a great bus system.

I haven't been to Oahu, but you will need a car to enjoy the Big Island. The FFKHR is great, they will lend you bicycles to ride to town, or you can take a long walk there, but the best snorkeling spots are a bit of a drive, and Volcano Nat'l Park is two hours away. You won't really have enough time to really do the island justice, imho, and Red brings up a great point: definitely stick to Oahu if the flights to Kona aren't direct.

With only 4 days I would vote for Oahu. The flight will most probably be direct to HNL. There is plenty to do without having a car. Tours are plentiful and inexpensive.

Save the other islands for when you are taking the entire family and will have time to spend.

There is plenty to see in Oahu. There are some great lessons there for your daughter...Pearl Harbor, Punch Bowl, Arizona Memorial. A great teaching opportunity. The north is more scenic. And there is public transport...or take a tour.

And the BI needs at least a week to do it justice...it is one of my favorite Islands. Last time we stayed there three weeks.

You will be fine either way. Both have direct flights...find out which one gets you there the earliest.

                Decisions...decisions.

We stayed one night in a hotel in Waikiki/Honolulu (Oahu), and then 10 days on the Big Island (split between Paniolo Greens and Fairfied Kona Village Resort).

The one night gave us time (the next morning) to visit Pearl Harbor and also Hanauma Bay Park for snorkeling before the early evening flight to Kona.

Oahu is extremely built up and although Waikiki is very nice as city beaches go, it doesn't compare to Hapuna Beach on the Big Island. Most of the tourists in Oahu seem to be there for shopping more than anything else.

You'll definitely want a car in Kona, however. Hapuna Beach is about 20 miles north of the Fairfield resort. And the good snorkeling is 5 to 10 miles south of the Fairfield resort. And once you're on the Big Island you've got to see Volcano which is about 100 miles from Kona.

We had very pleasant weather in early December. Days 82F, nights about 70F, and no rain.

                            It most certainly does!

I see OP also had seen another members very recent photos of the FF resort in Waikiki! How's that for information.

Marcia I know you will have a great time and I'm so glad you were able to use all the facets of TS4Ms!

Enjoy your trip and DON'T FORGET your digital camera &/or Video camera as we now do timeshare video footage on youtube.

We look forward to your review.
