I will be going to Honolulu for a conference in a couple of weeks, staying in central Waikiki. I have almost 48 hours in Honolulu before the conference begins. Have never been to Oahu before, although have been to other Hawaiian islands several times. I plan to hike up Diamond Head the afternoon I arrive and visit Pearl Harbor the next morning. I can't decide whether to spend the rest of my full free day driving North and touring a bit of the island, or just hanging in Honolulu. I am seeking opinions...

Is it worth the time to pop over to Ko'olina to check it out? Would I be able to swim in the lagoons there?
More questions: Can you really circle the island by car, or do I go up to Turtle Bay and then turn around?
About Waikiki- Can I walk along the beach all the way from the Hilton Hawaiian Village end to Diamond Head?
I am staying at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, which is in the mid portion of Waikiki near the International Place. Would I be safe walking to/from restaurants solo in the evenings around there? Any restaurant suggestions in that area? Thanks for your help.

We were on the Island of Oahu from Jan 5 to Jan 12. We did not check out the west side of Oahu. I heard driving north on the west side of Oahu from Ko'olina seems a little unsafe.
I would drive all the way around the East and North Shore. If you want to see Turtles I would stop at what is called Turtle Beach by some. It is a little hard to find but it is just off highway 83, but well worth it. It is not in the Turle Bay Resort. It is half way between Waimea Bay and Hale'iwa Town and at the end of a loop called Pohaku Loop Way.
Waikiki Beach is a soft beach and a little hard to walk. But much of the beach has a walk way for walking.
Also see my Link to my week on Oahu.

I would walk up Diamond Head but it is not a walk for the unfit.
I felt safe walking on the streets of Waikiki.

When we were there last year, we stayed a block away from the Hyatt on Kalakawa Ave (spelling?). This is the major street along the beach. It is very safe at nights on this avenue. Huge crowds, nite clubs, shops, performers on the street etc. We did not go on the side streets so cannot comment on that.

Walt, your pictures are great. Now I think I can answer my own question. Diamond Head is too far to walk from the beach area, I didn't realize there was a huge park in between them. I will take "The Bus".
I am glad the area I am staying is safe for walking around at night. The Hula Grille was recommended to me for dinner one night. Also plan to have a drink at the "House without a key". I would still love other restaurant suggestions.
Thanks all.
