Hawaiian Princess Makaha, Oahu, HI - what is this place like?

Hey Boca or anyone....have you seen this place or the neighborhood? From what I have read it is in a bad neighborhood. The Beach looks nice.

Haven't seen it, but it's in the area where the late great Hawaiian singer Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole lived during much of his singing life. (If you watch much TV, there's a fair chance you've heard his rendition of Over the Rainbow at some point.)

The beaches and mountain areas have looked beautiful to me in the pictures, and nicely located to be near enough for day trips to Honolulu without staying there. Sounds like a region which is culturally rich, but like many areas of the US where primarily indigenous people live, not economically.

Don't do it!

It has probably been 6 years since we drove by this resort. It is at the end of the road on Oahu with only one way in or out, no easy access to anything. The whole town was impoverished. The beaches had people living out of their cars and vans. There was nowhere I would have gotten out of the car. Not a tourist area.

Waianae is an extremely ROUGH area. This is the place that everyone will tell you to stay away from. The Marriott Ko'Olina is on the way to Waianae. My wife didn't want to stay at the Marriott the first time we went there because of it. Part of the reason there is so much security in the Ko'Olina resort area in Kapolei is that it is so close to Waianae.

I lived in Leeward Oahu for a long time. My husband is from the area (Ewa Beach).

Makaha is a very "local" area. Living on the beach is a long-time lifestyle, often chosen, sometimes not. Locals of Hawaiian and/or Samoan descent seem to especially embrace this 'kine style. It is cultural and family oriented for the most part.

As a "haole", I never had a problem as the locals knew me as "da nurse who 'wen helped my bruddah", etc. Sort of protected. I never had a problem, but I wasn't a tourist.
Having said this, as for all local areas be it Hawaii, Puerto Rico (La Perla), St. Maarten, Amsterdam, Tunisia, etc. , common sense should be followed and common courtesy maintained. The beach there used to be good. We used to swim there out by the power plant and called it "electric beach".

I noticed the same thing. In fact, there is a ton of Hawaii inventory there. I am going to join just for that.
