    Walt,

I can see why you or anyone for that matter would get that feeling. If you think the private signs are an issue at Papakea, you should see them at other resorts in West Maui. I'd have to agree that the Ka'anapali Beach Club is more open and inviting. It feels more like a hotel resort than a timeshare resort. The Papakea feels more like a condominium complex with neighbors partying with each other. I agree with that distinction. Some prefer the hotel resort feel. Others prefer the condo complex feel. Personally, I like both.

As an aside, I've noticed that many resorts in Hawaii are mixed use. I think this is smart. I like the resorts that have combinations of whole ownership, rentals, timeshare owners and exchangers. I believe they have the best chance of keeping costs down and maximizing resort utilization.

I didn't feel anyone was more or less friendly at either resort. I just walked right in, took pictures, said hello to people and just took in the environment. In fact, nobody gave me any trouble at any of the resorts, even the Kuleana which is very private and hard to get into without really trying hard. Remember, I only had 15-30 minutes at each resort. And, I didn't get to see any of the rooms. So, I didn't have time to have negative feelings about a location.

Many, if not most of the beaches are public in Maui. So, that visitors from other resorts come to "my beach" doesn't bother me. Stealing a free breakfast would be a problem. I don't agree with or condone that practice. Moreover, why would owners want to pay for the breakfasts of all those exchangers and renters? Seems like stopping the free breakfast is a better practice anyway. The way I look at it is if my resort doesn't have a beach and I have to walk to another resort to get to the beach, the other resort is more appealing. I don't view it as a slam on the guests who make use of public facilities. Just as a badge of honor that my resort has that feature and other don't.

I would rate the Ka'anapali Beach club slightly higher than the Papakea. So, you comments and some additions that I provided help to explain the rating difference.

I can understand the signs on the water side at Papakea. If you walk up the stairs from the beach at Ka'anapali Beach Club, the "private boardwalk" puts you just feet away from guests rooms. I wouldn't love that if I were staying there. It's too bad there's no beach right there, it'd be nice to be able to walk from Ka'anapali Beach Club south toward Ka'anapali Beach...

btw, when we were there over the summer, the beach at KBC was teeny tiny, barely enough room for a few lounges. But a little further north, by the ResortQuest property (I forget the name), the beach was nice and wide...

          Thanks for the pictures Walt.

Jim, you are a sick man. Wish I was there to go with you. Look forward to seeing your pictures. The VRI site has few if any pictures.

The Whaler looks great. Will have to check out a few others while there.

We are going to Maui for the first time and staying at Kahana Falls this summer for two weeks then to the Westin (on a promo). The reviews were decent on KF and we were able to get two consecutive weeks in a one bedroom so we took it. It has always been hard to find a decent resort in Maui on RCI which is why most of our time has been on Kauai and the BI.

We love Kauai and the BI. I have a feeling we are going to love Maui.

That is ugly. And I hate when they don't heat the pools.

              John,

Kahana Falls seemed to be a nice resort. It is right across the street from the Sands of Kahana. The Sands of Kahana hogs up all the beach front. So, the Kahana Falls only gets an angled view of the ocean at best.

The biggest disappointment for me was One Napili Way. At first I couldn't find it. I had to drive all the way to Kapalua and then cycle back. It really is a very small resort. And, it has no views whatsover. I think people who own there must love the inside of the units because the location is in the bottom 10% of west Maui resorts. I kept thinking yesteday that they must sell that resort only on the internet because you wouldn't buy it if you actually went there first. Just kidding about that. I'm sure it's a nice resort. It just doesn't have any views which is what I happen to value the most. But, it does beat the Gardens at West Maui. That resort sports a terrific view of the driving range at Kapalua.

Boca, we had exactly the same problem. The reason we wanted to go there was because there is a very nice beach, I had read but we never found the resort.

The manager seems to hold up the resale prices real well so that is one big plus for the owners.

Thanks for visiting the resorts and posting these pics because we are going to put in a Maui request for 2008 and Whaler and KBC were on our short list.

                    View from Valley Isle Maui

Good View. Sand is very soft and makes for hard walking.

View from Pahio at the Shearwater Kauai

A very nice smaller resort with a great ocean view from the 2nd floor.

I'd love to stay at either of these resorts someday.
I agree with your assessment of Kuleana Club and I'm glad you mentioned it. Our stay at Kuleana was outstanding because of the amazing view we had, and the little beach right there, which we always had to ourselves. If I were a west-coaster, I'd probably look into buying a week in the oceanfront building we stayed in. This resort rarely gets notice or accolades because it's older and the units are small and not flashy, but location was so perfect and to us (just a party of 2) it was paradise.

                            Waikiki Beach Walk

Yes, the pool at the Wyndham/Fairfield is very cold. We are at the resort now and every day there are people sunbathing by the pool but few are in the water.

The resort is in the heart of Waikiki. This area has been renovated since we were here two years ago and looks wonderful to me. New shops and restaurants are opening frequently. The Royal Hawaiian shopping center nearby is also undergoing an update. I think this is a great location for a timeshare, and the units at Wyndham are lovely and spacious.

Where in Waikiki can you find a timeshare with huge gardens and pools? It would be difficult to locate beachfront property in 2007 even for a hotel to be built. The other islands have more room for development, but I believe Wyndham was very fortunate to obtain this property.

Wyndham is a very nice Resort!

I also believe Wyndham was very forunate to obtain this property. I think the units are very nice and the location is great. It just doesn't have many views outside of other buildings and the parking lot building.

I didn't see the Marriott Resort which I would think is very nice. However, I think I would rather stay in Waikiki than at the Marriott because of the locations of both Resorts on Oahu. I'm not sure how far the Marriott is away from Waikiki but it must be at least 30 to 45 minutes to Waikiki. There is nothing like seeing Waikiki at night. However, I also think if you really want to get the feel of Hawaii you should spend another week on one of the other islands.

(Anyone have have any picture and Views from the Marriott?)

The Thrump Building Waikiki is not in a better location. It is just a block away and also has a limit view of the Ocean. The cost of the Condo are $450,000 to $2,700,000. Only the very top floors will be able to see over the other buildings and see the Ocean.

My only problem with the Wyndham was our unit of 101.

Thanks for posting some redeeming qualities about the Fairfield/Wyndham.. I was beginning to get nervous about my trip there this year!

First time to Hawaii, I don't want to be disappointed I am staying at a Sheraton for a few days first, then to another island after my week at Fairfield... still waiting for that request to come in
