  • Paniolo Greens Resort

I'm meeting up with a buddy at Paniolo Greens Resort the week-end after T-Day. (the big island) Will be about four couples in good health but definitely Beatles era folk. Any tips, suggestions, caveats?

There is a nice pool complex

right there, or just down the hill are some of the better beaches.
You will be in the middle of a huge golf complex.
About 30 minutes up the hill is the Parker Ranch and Wiamea town, some excellent restaurants. The trip over the saddle road to Hilo is scenic.
North to Hawi, some more great eateries, or south to Kona.
    Lots of stuff to do.
I would recommend that you get the Big Island Revealed and look it over.

Thanks for your reply. I have already purchased "The Big Island Revealed". Will read it next week while basking in the sun at St Croix, USVI.

We spent a week at Paniolo Greens in January and I really enjoyed it. The book "Big Island Revealed" is a must- I'm glad you have it already. The grocery store just up the road from Paniolo Greens is well-stocked with reasonable prices.

I liked the relatively easy access to the north end of the island, to the beaches at Waikoloa, and to the Volcanoes National Park. The day at the part was our longest day - we drove down the west coast to Hilo and then to the park, drove around the crater and down to where the road is cut off by the lava, then back "home" again. We stopped for dinner in Waimea at Charlie's Thai restuarant; the food was great and it gave a good break in the long day. I was happy that night to arrive back at a condo that was so close to Waimea.

        Have a great trip.

Not too far "north" of Paniolo Greens (above the Waikoloa Resort area) is one of our favorite restaurants, Cafe Pesto. It's a "must do" every time we go to the big island.

We love the beaches up that end as well, but we also like being closer to "town" and restaurants and things. That being said, for our Feb/08 trip, we're doing a week in Kona and a week at the Bay Club. But we definitely would have taken Paniolo if it had come up first. We stayed there for our second timeshare vacation and really liked it.

Anywhere in Hawaii is good, right?

We love going out to dinner or lunch here whenever we go to BI. Also, stop for malasadas at Tex's Diner ...on the way to Akaka Falls.

This is our favorite itinerary as well and just what we're doing this summer. We'll start with two nights in Volcano, then a week in Kona and a week at Paniolo Greens. I still have a request in for Bay Club (to replace Paniolo Greens), but if we don't get it we'll still be happy.

Stargazing on Mauna Kea, accessable via Saddle Road, as long as there is no full moon! The volunteers provide alot of information, show movies, offer hot chocolate and bring out telescopes at the visitors center. Bring jackets/sweatshirts and wear pants--it's cold up there.

Thank-you all for responses. Just got back from St Croix, USVI so will now have some time to concentrate on the Big Island. Keep any tips coming.

                      Thanks for sharing your itinerary

We'll be doing similar in December - without knowing ahead of time how nice it was: 2 nights in Honolulou, at the new Fairfield Waikiki (because Delta stopped flying to Kona!), 2 weeks at Kona and then one week at Paniola Greens.

Glad to know all these good things!
