    Random beating leaves witnesses wondering

A male between the ages of 16 to 20 years old pummeled an elderly man outside of Pono Kai Resort yesterday afternoon, for no apparent reason, witnesses said.

The victim, in his 60s, suffered several injuries, including a deep head wound that was still bleeding 40 minutes after the assault.

The wound was between the man’s temple and brow and required stitches, witnesses said.

The older man was reportedly walking with groceries around 3:30 p.m. when a male of average build with dark hair and medium skin started following him, heckling him. The attacker then put down the red guitar he was carrying and started punching and hitting the man, knocking him out.

When the Kaua‘i Police Department and firefighters responded to the scene, the attacker had fled the scene. Eyewitnesses said the suspect had a skateboard.

“Here we’ve got an elderly man who is a guest here, with his wife and in-laws who are likely in their 80s, and there is blood everywhere,” said a no-

    ticeably upset Dai Arnado,

    concierge at Pono Kai Resort.

“This is just absolutely sickening,” she said. “The guy called him an ‘old man’ and then started hitting him on the head until he went down. Teenagers around here are ‘nuclear’ and out of control and parents need to reprimand their children,” Arnado said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Kaua‘i Police Department dispatch at 241-1711.

Was there any mention of a "hate" crime? Hawaiian kid & a haole visitor?

Just read all the article and I see no motive other than insanity.

      How sad.

Unfortunately there is a huge problem with meth and other drugs on the islands....one wonders if this will be linked to drug abuse....

We have friends who live on the island and who say that the locals are not been prepared for how much of a toll the drugs have taken on the youth of the islands.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Yeah meth or 'ice' has been a huge problem for years on all the islands. It is a very devastating drug and addiction.
