  • No Joke - - Hawaii expects tsunami waves

A small tsunami, but swimmers and beach walkers should beware...

"Earthquake Hits Solomon Islands; Tsunami Warning for Hawaii

    By Emma O'Brien

April 2 (Bloomberg) -- An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit 45 kilometers (25 miles) off the coast of the South Pacific island nation of the Solomon Islands, spurring a tsunami warning for Hawaii.

The quake took place at 7:39 a.m. Solomon Islands time, close to the coastal settlement of Gizo, in the Solomon's New Georgia archipelago. Its epicenter was 345 kilometers from the nation's capital, Honiara, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Honolulu, issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii, though said there was no threat of destruction to the U.S. state. Some coastal areas could experience unusual currents and changes in sea levels, the center said on its Web site.

These effects will probably start to be felt about 6:33 p.m. on April 1 in Hawaii, according to the center. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the Solomon Islands or Hawaii."

I heard this morning that a Tsunami did hit some place but I did not catch where. Waves were a few yards high, 8 people confirmed dead.

Given that they typically are caused by earthquakes, until there are accurate forecasting models for that natural phenomenon, we will not have long range predictions for tsunamis.

Oh yea, there is a small one scheduled for sometime around the 4th of July.

The Democrats are working on a super secret weapon that they can unleash on the Republican convention sometime later in the year at an as of yet undisclosed location.

Rummor has it that Hillary Clinton is the mastermind behind this new weapon and she had it developed under the supervision of the former Pres Billy. Lucky for me, I have to work the whole week so there is no chance of me being near the beach. For those that are not so fortunate, I welcome you to come to work with me and I am sure I can find something for everyone to do as I would hate to see the vast left wing conspiracy cause you harm!

It is affirmative. We are expecting a Tsunami in Santa Clara around 2 PM on July 4th. That is when my brother is expected to jump in the pool

Having had relatives who barely escaped with their lives when the tsunami hit India, etc, I tend to take all tsunami warnings seriously. That's one reason, I'm so glad our timeshare is up on a high cliff! One thing I still haven't figured out, though, is when the Kauai tsunami warning siren is scheduled to go off. We've been on island a couple of times when it was tested and can't seem to find a common factor. Anyone know?

While on Hanalei pier in 2002, we were told that they test the signals on the first day of every month at noon .

When we were in Kona last week, we were told theirs is tested one Monday of the month, forgot which one. Also, heard the siren 2 weeks ago in Maui.

                          Ann-Marie,

Were you able to snorkel at Captain Cook's monument? If not (or if so), do you know what the situation is with access there since the earthquake last year?

                          Arriving Kona 7/22, can't wait
