Just wondering which island, Maui or Kauai, has the warmer water temp in April. My kids would like to take surfing lessons again. When we were in HI in January 2006, they took surfing lessons in Maui (Lahaina). The water temp was incredible. It was like bath water temp. I'm not sure how the water temps are in Kauai, especially up in the Princeville area. Are they warm and calm enough for young kids? Thanks!

Gosh, I would think the temps would all be similar.
But, I've been known to be wrong. You might want to look into which area would have the better potential for surfing lessons. We stayed in Princeville (Makai Club) years ago and I really don't remember the beaches there. I do remember the beaches in Hanalei, particularly Hanelei Bay as being quite calm and good for kids.

I think you'll find the water temperature close enough so that if you went swimming off Kauai on one day and off Maui the next, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. There is less than 50 miles difference north-to-south between the two islands. Thus, the biggest difference is likely to be perceived differences based on which side of the island you are, how windy it is, etc.Comment

There are a couple of Internet sites that suggest slightly warmer temperatures on Kauai, but that could be because the site for the Maui gauge is in Kahului, on the north side of the island.Comment

I think the surf lessons that they offer in Kauai is by Hanalei Bay. I looked at a Kauai visitors website and Hawaiian Adventures? is what they recommended and is based by Hanalei Bay. If you say that Hanalei Bay is great for kids, then that makes my decision much harder now. Keep the replies coming and I have to do more research, I guess.

Well, can't help with any personal recommendations on the surfing lessons. When my dds took lessons they did it on Oahu with the Honolulu Firefighters.

When I visited the 4 main islands I noticed temp differences. Kona was without a doubt the hottest as was the water there. That is most likely do from the active Volcano. IMO Kauai was the coolest but that could depend on what the side of the island you are on. If you are by Princeville I found it cooler. If you were by the Canyons it was warmer. Maui I found to be on the warmer side unless you were up near the Volcano before sunrise. Oahu I thought was cooler than the rest. Tortola has very warm water
We have traveled A LOT of islands, and Tortola beat all...the water temp was 82 degrees, and this was in November. The surf was unreal, and if you are into surfing I honestly think you could do it here. During the summer, the water is so flat, that the locals swim laps.
Torotola is limited as far as beaches, Long Bay is about it, but is gorgeous, and only about six people at most on the beach at a time!

We came back last week from Maui and snorkeled most days. Some days the water felt cooler but it may have been the wind factor. We didn't notice any difference between Maui and Lanai.
It's very easy and inexpensive to rent a wet suit. You pay $25 for the week where we rented our equipment ( Maui Dreams Dive Co. ). I like it for sun protection too.
