  • Your Favorite Resorts

My wife, 4 year old son and I recentlly stayed on Maui and enjoyed the vaction so much that we are considering buying a timeshare in Hawaii.

We are not interested in any of the resorts on Waikiki, we are looking for something quieter on Kauai, Maui or the Big Island. We checked out the Kaanipali area of Maui and even that was more overdeveloped than we would like.

The Marriot resorts on Kauai have caught my eye but I was wondering what other resorts you might suggest. Beach access would be nice but not required.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I know shopgirl is an owner of mulitple weeks at Bali Hai Villas. We'll be visiting BHV next month and I'll comment when we return.

I like the FF/Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort on the Big Island. Nice property with pools, BBQs and lush landscaping. It's across the road from properties and businesses on the ocean, but those have just a view of the ocean.

Hanalei Bay Resort next to the Princeville Resort hotel has beach access, plus beautiful views of Hanalei Bay.

          There are several nice resorts

a lot depends upon what type of amenities you are expecting, and how much you want to spend.

On Kauai, the Marriott's are both very nice. With average costs of $15-22k resale for a 2 bedroom unit and annual fees of $1100-1700, they are the current top of the pile.

The former Embassy ( now the Sunterra at the point), the Shearwater ( Pahio) and the Hanalei Bay resort are just a small step down, average resale prices , $8500-16000 for an annual 2 bedroom with fees about $1000 per week.

Then there are the other Pahio resorts, prices from $2500-6k for an annual 2 bedroom with dues in the $900 range.

My favorite 2 resorts on Kauai are the Pono Kai in Kapaa and the Lawai Beach in Poipu.

At the Pono Kai you can find a 2 bedroom for $2500-4500 with annual fees of $828

The Lawai Beach resort and Alii or Banyan 2 bedroom are running about $8500-11k with annual fees if $842.

There are others like the Cliffs Club, the Alii Kai II, the Banyan Harbor, Kapaa Shores,Makai Club or Makai Club Condos, that each have their own charms. I am not current on values or annual costs on these.

There is a lot to choose from, like I said it all depends upon what you are expecting.

We own Kona Coast II on the Big Island-2 units, Pono Kai on Kauai-2 units, and EOY at Maui Schooner. Except for our first Kona Coast II, 4 additional Hawaii timeshares were purchased on eBay for a fraction of developer prices so we could vacation with family and friends. Take advantage of properties others no longer want!

We've stayed at the embassy poipu twice and had a great time with all the amenities but we own at the Marriott Waiohai and absolutely love it being right next to a usable beach without having to drive and close to restaurants

Another vote here for the KHV resort in Kona. I've stayed there and at the other FF/Wyndham resort in that area (Royal Sea Cliff) and would be happy as an owner at either, if the price (and MF's) are right.

I have also stayed at Paniolo Greens which is not close to the beach, but has its own charm and perks. We are scheduled to be there for two weeks in September and I can hardly wait!

As for the other islands, we've stayed at what was the Embassy Suites Kaanapali on Maui and liked it A LOT! Great location right on the beach, wonderful snorkeling right from their beachfront, and a nice pool too.

Good luck in finding your perfect Hawaiian retreat!

We like the facilities at the Kahana Sands in Maui. Reasonable prices too!
