golf on the Big Island

Dh and younger dd want to play some golf during our visit in August. Dd is 16 and just beginning, so they are most likely looking at maybe playing 9 holes. We'll be staying one week at Kona Coast and one week at Paniolo Greens. I know there are courses in both locations. I can get slight discounts at Kona Country Club (which I think is the one located at Kona Coast), at Big Island Country Club (haven't figured out where that one is located) and I think we also get a price break at the Waikoloa Village course when staying at Paniolo Greens.

So, I'm looking for input on the various courses. TIA

I do not ever play golf but the last time I was on the big island my son wanted to play for the first and last time. Ask around I found a cheap public coarse for and payed peanuts to play. We went in the afternoon when it was so hot. We never finished nine holes and hung up our clubs after that.

August will most likely be hot. My dh loves to play golf and his favorite course is Makalei Country Club (808-325-6625). It is set in a higher altitude up the 190 Hwy (Palani Rd) and cooler than the Kona Coast Country Club. On the same road, but further on is the Big Island Country Club. My husband has played this also several times.

Hilo has a muni course, but we have never stayed close enough to make the low cost worth the trip. However, we will be at Paniolo Greens in January and this course will be a possibility. Hilo side is usually cooler.

Be sure to ask for a coupon sheet at Hilo Hattie's. There are a few golf discounts on it that dh uses. Also, ask about twilight rates. Makalei is nearly half price after 11:00 (or was last year).

Thanks. I know what the weather will be like, and since I won't be playing I'll leave it up to them as to when they want to play. I was just thinking it would be more convenient (and possibly cheaper) for them to play one of the course where we would be staying. I appreciate all of the input.

Makalei is my hubby's favorite golf course, too! I rode alone once and thought it was truly beautiful. And, as you say, being a little higher in altitude it was cooler. On the other hand, the only time we find Hawaii too warm is when the trade winds cease. Coming from a HOT climate (Arizona's low desert) we're used to high high temps, but, get us somewhere it's below 60 and we're dying! <g>
