Temperatures in Kauai

Going to Kauai (staying at Pono Kai) in a week and a half.

What do I wear? We normally go to Grand Cayman this time of year, and as far as clothes, my thoughts there are less is better as it is just so HOT HOT HOT.

Am I wrong in thinking the Kauai will be cooler? Where I would normally wear running shorts and a tank top, will I be happier in shorts and a T-shirt?

Do I need a light jacket?

What are your thoughts?

If you have been there, what was the best thing you took? What do you wish you had taken?

Oh, does anyone know if Pono Kai has internet in the rooms?

We stayed in Princeville in July and my mother-in-law needed a sweater. I didn't understand that because I was perfectly fine sleeveless and wearing shorts and sandals.

It depends on your own "inner thermostat," I think. Rick and I are miserably hot in Orlando. We absolutely hate the summer months in the heat and humidity. Colorado is very cool, generally, and the heat outside lately feels like an oven to us, but I would rather step out into an oven and do errands or yardwork than step into a sauna and try to do the same.

Princeville is on the North Shore and is generally a little cooler and definitely rainier, but the humidity doesn't bother us at all. I don't really understand what the difference between 80 in Orlando and 80 in Hawaii. We have a very dear friend who is a meterologist and he explained relative humidity at length, but I zoned out about 1/3 through the explanation. I don't get it, but it IS different. Though I don't really mind the 80 degree temperature in Orlando much, but I really dislike the 90 degree temperature there.

So if you have to wear a sweater when the air conditioning is set to 74 degrees, you probably need one, because that is what I would equate Kauai weather to in indoor temperatures. Have fun!

The weather on central Kauai

In August/September will be highs is the upper 80's with overnight lows right at 70.

We never need anything other than tank tops and shorts with flip-flops unless it is winter ( Jan-Feb) .

The PK units all have a/c, the one bedrooms in the living area, the 2 beds in the master bedroom and the living area, plus the great breezes in Kapaa make it very pleasant.

Now it can get cool in the evening in Princeville or Hanalei, and down right warm out on Polohali Beach, or the lower Waimea canyon. Also if you go up to Kokee park, it will be 15-20 degrees cooler.

They used to have web-tv, and I seem to remember seeing some type of hook-up for the internet. I think I remember reading Boca's post about there being wifi, iirc.

kauai weathr

hello..i was on kauai a couple of yrs ago during the fall (Oct? ) months .I never needed anything more than short-sleeved shirt and shorts and sandals , even @ nite ....you can't go into the interior of the island like you can on Maui or the big island ..so going to a higher elevation is out. all your time is spent around the outer coastal shore. so you shouldn't need anything but a long-sleeved overshirt at most @ nite.
Like shopgirl said ..it depends on your own inner thermostat. I am hypo-thryoid ,which means , i get chilled easily and i didn't need any jackets or sweaters on my visit. Visit the weather channel for Kauai and read the average temps chart for the month your going, it may help you decide. safe journey and enjoy. Thom

PS: i have to warn you about helicopter rides there .5 people were killed in a sight-seeing helicopter crash while i was there..the updrafts and downdrafts along those knife-sharp ridges are treacherous ....i even got scared on my flight. Even the Army rescue helicopter almost went down over the crash site.

All you need are about three pairs of shorts, about three shirts, and a good pair of sandals. If you plan to hike, then appropriate footwear is in order.

Board shorts work wonderfully.

I think it depends on three things:

Your "inner-thermostat"
The timeframe you're going
Where you're staying at

First of all, I'm cold-natured.. We've been to Kauai three times (Jan., Sept., and Nov) and always stayed on the North Shore.


In Jan., I definitely needed a sweater/light jacket in the mornings and evenings. It was perfect during the day for shorts and sandals.

Sept.- Warm w/ some rainy nights. - Didn't need extra clothing for this trip. It was humid and even got a little toasty at times.

Nov. - Rain, rain, rain. - With all the rain, it was cool (to me) and I needed extra comfort clothes to ward off the chill in the mornings/evenings. However, it was warm enough during the day for shorts/sandals.
