  • To take or not to take...

    Hello, everyone!

I finally got a chance to grab a first week in Maui, Hawaii which is the other island my family and I want to visit. The problem is this week is from Friday to Friday and my second week in the Big Island starts Saturday. I don't know if I'll get another chance in Maui but we have that problem of where to stay the Friday night before we go to the Big Island. Should I just take a chance that another more desirable week would pop up or should I grab it? If I decide to give it up and nothing comes up for Maui, how is Oahu in April? How is the traffic there also? That's what making me hesitate about going there. I hope you guys can advice me on this dilemma since I have to give my answer as soon as I can.

    Thanks,
    Mutual

Generally, without knowing more, I'd gab the week. Finding a room for one night isn't that hard, plus you're changing islands already.

      M,

What did you get and who did you get it with?
Are you happy with the resort and unit size?

As Bill says one night is not too difficult to find.

I'd take it and stay in a hotel one night if I had to. In fact, we've done that in the past.

          Hi, Lawren,
I got a 1 BR in Maui Hill with TPI. The resort looks nice on the net. Marcie is being awfully patient with me while I decide what to do. So, I won't have a problem looking for a place to stay for that 1 night in Maui? I wasn't sure if hotels give you a hard time if all you want is 1 night with them. Also, if we decide to leave on Sat. instead of Fri., is that allowable? I just don't want the kids to miss 6 days of school instead of only 5. I know it's only one day but school officials frown on that.
Thanks for replying so quickly! You too, Bill4728!

We own at Maui Hill and are very happy with it. You can rent one night there, but you will have to change units as they have separate rental and timeshare units. You can go directly to their website for the rental if you want. Home - Maui Lea Timeshares

I have heard nice things about Maui Hill. If I remember correctly you are doing spring break dates right?

Could be hard to get something else. Very hard.

I doubt you'd have a problem with a one night hotel stay. Big Island might be cheaper for that but the experts will chime in.

Yes you can call and let them know you will be checking one day late.

Congratulations on your trades. It is exciting isn't it?

Yes, it is all finally coming together. Thank you to TS4rms for all of you valuable advice and help, especially you, Lawren! Now, I have to tackle the airfare.

In going back and re-reading your post I would suggest the one night stay on the Big Island. Since you have to check out somewhere between 10 and noon you can catch an early flight, then get a hotel on the Big Island. Should have no problem finding something there for just the one night. What we've done is to stay one night in Volcano Village so we could spend time at Volcano National Park, then move on to our timeshare from there. If you're going to do that, you might want to look at flying in to Hilo rather than Kona. Just an idea.

I second Luanne's suggestion - an extra night is better spent on the Big Island, because it's so much "Big"-ger than Maui, harder to see it all from one place, and Volcano Park is not to be missed. I often like having an extra night in-between because it usually gives us an opportunity to see stuff we would have missed.

Some rentals advertise a 2-night (or more) minimum, but you can ask for 1 anyway and see what they say, many will waive their minimum depending on the season. Or you could conceivably decide to stay 2 nights, depending on how much time you'd want at Volcano Park and the east side of the Big Island - it's not unusual for us to give up a night of a timeshare now and then.

We've stayed just one night at Kilaeua Lodge in Volcano.

If worst comes to worst, you can stay at Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui. It's been heavily remodeled since I stayed there but I had no problem with getting a single night. Some rooms didn't have a private bathroom back then. It was rather rustic. That's OK for about one night. I'm sure it's much improved since Best Western bought it.

Their Saturday/Sunday brunches were a huge attraction.

Make sure that you call the day that you are to check in to tell them that you will be late or it could cost you the week. I have met people that have had that problem when they did not do that.

We have run into that situation many times. An extra night's vacation is not a bad thing. Thre are some pretty reasonable hotels in Kona and Hilo - I know, we're in one in between timeshares this coming spring.
