What is considered a reasonable fare (in other words, cheap fare) to Maui?
I've been watching airfares everyday for about a month now and am not sure if I should book it or not already? I'm seeing around $830 from JFK to OGG. Should I book it now or wait another month or so?
    Thanks,
    Mutual

If you are traveling in prime time, including summer, I wouldn't wait. I've done it twice from NY, paid b/t $750 and $850, and fares never went down. at one point there was better fare on I think maybe ATA through Phoenix (or was it Southwest), about $600 at 11 months out, but I waited too long and it was gone, plus I was trying to use Delta dollars.

4 weeks ago we flew NC to Honolulu for $600-something, on Delta. Fares for our dates had been $800-something, I was watching for awhile, then suddenly dropped by over $200. And when they dropped, they stayed down for at least a month... but maybe these sales happen in the fall only, not prime season, so depends when you're going.

I need to fly on United because my husband has a ff ticket. From Boston to Big Island in early June is over $1100! Sounds to me like you've found some bargains compared to what I'm seeing.

Maybe you can think outside the box a bit. Like Sue, we had one FF on United. The other matching fare tickets were $1100 each. This was for the last week in June.

I ended up going to a regular travel agent. She was able to match the FF, get us a rental car for the week AND 3 days at Outrigger Reef on the Beach with transfers to and from the airport and lei greeting for less than the price of what 2 airline tickets would have cost us.

Have you tried flying direct to HNL and getting interisland flights instead. Those are relatively cheap from a FF point of view.

A few months later BIL was able to get air from NY to Lihue for around $700 but you never know.

Lately my favorite airfare tool has been kayak.com.

Continental flies direct from EWR to HNL, I've seen those flights for around $700. Then you have to hop to Maui, which adds about $70 each way unless you hit a sale.

We did PHL to SFO (2 days) to Kona (12 days) and then Kona to LAX to PHL on the way back for just over $800 in March on USAir/United.

Sue, we had to fly out of Boston this past summer, the fares were quite a bit higher than out of NY airports...
