Inter -Flights between Maui and Kona

When is the best time to buy my inter-island ticket for April between these two islands? Also, I read from a previous post that taking an inter-island flight from Maui, you have to be at the airport at least 3 hours before flight time. Is this still true? I'm trying to get an afternoon flight out of Maui to Kona and then a late afternoon flight out of Kona to Maui (we're leaving a day early for home). Is this possible? Also, when do they offer those really cheap airfares that I sometimes see posted her? Thanks!

I can't comment on the timing, but we booked our inter-island flights between Honolulu, Big Island and Kauai a week ago for 6/08 and got $29 each direction on Hawaiin Airlines.

The airlines without assigned seats are more of a problem. They oversell the flights and if you're not on line before they run out of seats you're SOL. I think (not sure, check before booking) that Hawaiian Airlines assigns seats, so it's less of a crapshoot.

I may not be right but it's my understanding that Hawaii does assign interisland seats to those who have Hawaiian Frequent Flier Miles or have flown Hawaiian Airlines from the mainland. Not sure about the others, though. Anyone else know for sure?
