  • Cell Phone Use Oahu and Big Island

    Hi,

We have Virgin Mobile and Verizon. Any problems with either of these two services other than occassional dead spots? Oahu and Big Island.

    Leaving Thanksgiving day.

    Thanks

We had excellent Verizon service on the Big Island everywhere a regular car could drive. No service at some very secluded remote beaches, which was a bit frightening when we thought we were going to have to ditch the jeep and walk 6 miles back to civilization...

Also great service at HNL, not sure about the rest of Oahu but am guessing it's fine.

We travel to Kauai every year for 3-6 weeks each trip (we are spoiled rotten, Hawaiian timeshares are awesome!). We've never had a problem with our cell phone using both AllTel and Verizon on any of the islands. We've been amazed at some of the remote places cells work! Of course, there are a few places you won't have service but generally no problem!

We have Verizon. Where i live, we have several dead spots within a one mile radius. We never encountered one dead spot while on the Big Island, Oahu or Maui.

Verizon works better on the BI than it does near my home in Cali.

Dumb question I guess. Do I have to do anything with my phone settings?

For Verizon, it's always a good idea to hit *228 to update the settings in a new location. I know you're already gone and back, but figured I'd post this for others given the previous poster's having bumped the thread back up (hmm, Marsha, could you be trying to up your post count to get to the Ex-Ops?)

Not in range of a cell tower - I live just outside of Chicago & there are dead patches here - well 1 that I know of!

                        Glitter,

Sorry, you caught me - but also...I just couldn't resist. Seriously, I did not know about the *228 for Verizon.

Back from Oahu and the Big Island. Verizon worked great everywhere we traveled. Didn't go deep into any craters though.
