  • Can anybody help me novice to TM sales and rentals

My name is Michael and my wife Nancy and I live in the Pacific NW. We have owned a Shell Vacations CLub timeshare in Hawaii for the last ten years. We purchased ten years ago to take breaks from the harsh NW winters. Due to my untimely job loss this last year, we have decided to offer our timeshare up for sale. I would like to hear from anyone on what is the best way to do this. I understand that there are companies that can help in this process, if anyone has any suggestions that would be great. We are both near retirement and we need to scale back on our finances till then. Looking forward to hearing back from anyone willing to offer advice. Thank you.

Michael, Don't count on any resellers selling your timeshare. Most of them exist by charging upfront fees after telling glossy lies- they could care less if they ever sell. First you need to find out what your timeshare is worth. Then you can advertise it yourself or sell it through a legitimate and ethical reseller (which you will also have to find). Hang around and read- someone here may have an idea of what your timeshare is worth.

How many Shell points do you own? There are usually quite a few ebay listings for Shell Vacation Club points, so you might get some idea of what they sell for on ebay by searching completed and current listings.

My friends own Shell Vacation Club points. They originally purchased 7000, and were having trouble planning how to use them. Then, they went to the Big Island last year and were talked into buying 9000 more points, or something like that! Now I am trying to help them rent our their points/weeks, because they don't have time to plan or use them all!

Good luck! The standard advice is to never pay an upfront fee to list your timeshare for sale!

        TH Rental vs. Sell advice

I recieve 4,000 points each year and currently have banked 7750 points, I would be glad to rent just to cover my yearly maintenence fees. I would rent the points if I could find that elusive "timeshare reseller" that everyone is refering to. Any suggestions, has anyone had success at doing this? If so where would I list my timeshare?

You don't need to find an "elusive timeshare reseller" to rent your points, if that is what you might like to do.

Book a prime week in Hawaii with your points. Then advertise it in places such as craigslist, this forum, redweek, myresortnetwork, tugbbs, etc. You'd have to do screening, possibly a simple contract, PayPal, etc. Look at those sights for "comps" on what such a week might rent for. I also know that with Shell, you can exchange your points for cash cards, dinners, etc., can you not? It probably doesn't cover your MFs, but it is another option.

Word of advice on the TUGBBS...if you post an ad to that website, your email is shared with all. I posted my timeshare on both TUG and redweek and because you do not need to be a member of TUG to access someone's email, I was receiving all sorts of emails from scam artists on a daily basis.
Other than that small glitch in the system, it is a good website.

The problem with real life is that there is no background music.

I have had great success renting weeks on Redweek.
