In 2004, my wife, daughter (then 7 yrs old), and I (as well as other family members) wanted to kayak in Kauai. We needed a family friendly outfit and were very happy and satisfied with Outfitters Kauai - Outdoor Adventure Activities, Kauai, Hawaii who had a great Kaipu Falls Safari including kayaking, ziplines, hiking, waterfalls, rope swings, a hayride across Kipu Ranch, and a ride on an exotic motorized canoe. It was expensive and we felt well worth it.
In January 2008 we wanted to Kayak the Wailua River and shopped around for different companies. Most were expensive at about $80 to $100 per person for guided tours. Well we finally decided on Kayak Kauai, Hawaii With Kayak Wailua, LLC, Your River Kayaking Adventure Outfitters which was a bare bones outfit with the cheapest price around. The total with all the taxes and tip was just over $200. It was a family run operation and when I say bare bones I mean they don't have much overhead. They operate outside next to a Shell station as the gathering and parking point. Then they take you and the kayaks by van to the tour for an easy launch right were the Smiths Fern Grotto boats launch.
Their description is accurate:
Your kayak adventure will meander you 2.5 miles upstream where you'll first pass an old Hawaiian Village. Secure your kayak at an island in the north fork and continue your expedition on foot through the pristine canyons and tropical rain forest of the Wailua River Valley interior to Secret Falls a.k.a. Uluwehi Waterfalls.
My wife and I took our now 10 yr old daughter, and our 5 year old son. We were with one other couple and a guide. The guide grew up on the river and was pretty good. We went at our own pace and we had a blast....it was one of the highlights of the trip. And we saved a good amount of money by going with Kayak Wailua. When we get more confidence and the kids get a bit older then we can just rent kayaks and save even more.
We love Kauai.
