  • Aloha from Kona

It is a glorious blue sky day here in Kailua-Kona. We left Sacramento yesterday as the big storm was coming in. It was snowing pretty heavy at our home in the Sierras so we are thrilled to be escaping to warm, tropical Hawaii.

We are spending a week at the Wyndham Kona Hawiian Resort. We traded our Palm Desert unit through TPI. Check-in was easy and the staff is friendly & helpful. We have stayed here before and really enjoy the resort. Our unit is in good shape and, although there seems to be plenty of guests, it is very peaceful & quiet. We purchased a lot of fresh local fruit & veggies at the big farmer's market just down the road about a mile towards town. The Safeway on Henry St. across the highway had everything else we need. We plan to go visit the observatory later this week, something we have never done. We may go to the Waiapo Valley, too, another thing we have not done on previous visits. We haven't seen any whales nor heard of any sightings.

After a week here we will be on Kauai for 3 more weeks so we may see some whales then.

The computer is free. There are 2 set-up for guests to use for 30 min. at a time. Since I'm not a laptop owner, this is a nice addition to the resort for me.

Have a great time. I got back from Kona on the 12th and wish I was still there. We went to the Four Seasons for the first time (for lunch). Oh my gosh! What an incredible resort.

We just got back last Saturday from two weeks on the Big Island. We saw some whales, but you have to really watch for them. But we did see a few on a snorkel trip and a dinner cruise.

                  Have a great time!!

Julie, have a wonderful time! We love BI, and have enjoyed Waipio Valley often, it is scenic and fun to explore.

Also, on your drive be sure to look for Tex' Drive In , on Hwy 19 in Honokaa, a place where the best malassadas are made!

We cannot go to Hawaii for quite some time, as the economy is really hurting us, so we are thrilled to live vicariously thru our friends...have a wonderful time and bring home some great stories.

Oh, another fave spot is up north, the Pololu Valley Lookout, and the town of Kohala. There is also a King Kamehameha statue in the area that we love to visit.

                      Whale Watching

We just returned from the Big Island last week. We saw lots of whales mostly in the Waikoloa area. Go visit the Hilton Waikoloa; ride the tram and boats; see the dolphins and then take a walk out to the point past their lagoon. That's were we saw several. Some were close/some distant. We also saw whale activity from the road and pulled into one of the historic parks further up the road.

AND, the weather was so clear we actually saw Maui!!! I didn't know you could see Maui from the Big Island. It's only 30 miles across the channel and that is where most of the whale activity was.

After many years visiting the Big Island and staying in the Kona area, we finally spent a week up north at Paniolo Greens. We thoroughly enjoyed our unit, right on the golf course, turkeys and all.
                      Is it vacation time yet?

It's been a great week. We've seen lots of whales. We did something we've NEVER done before...took a bus tour. We decided to allow Hubby to enjoy the ride and we signed up for an all day circle island tour. It was great. Someone's waiting for the computer so I'll be back later.
                          Aloha, Julie

Just printed out my boarding passes for tomorrow. This free computer thing is sure a nice perk. Too bad some of the other big timeshare outfits don't have this. The only other time we saw it was at Four Seasons. Anyhooo....

it's been great here on the B.I. We have been to all our favorite places including Hawi and the Pololu lookout. We could see Maui very clearly and the top of Mauna Kea with snow on it. The "vog" is really bad on the Hilo side of the island. They closed part of the Rim Road and just reopened the Lava Tube Wednesday. People were getting sick from the fumes.

Best whale viewing was at some little state park up in North Kohala. I'd never heard of the park before (sorry the name escapes me but it starts with an L.) The park isn't much but the views from the bluff are awsome and the whales put on a great show for us as the headed toward Maui.

                            Well gotta go. Aloha!!
