  • Aloha from Maui

We have been in Maui for almost a month and it has been a wonderful vacation. We have seen more whales this year than we have ever seen before. There is a reason for this. The Pacific Whale Foundation did an "official count" last year and they counted about 900 plus whales. They did another official count this year in February and counted 1726 whales so that is almost double in count. It can only get better next year! We have seen whales from our lanai over and over again from early morning to sunset, if we were home.

We had friends with us for two weeks who had never been to the Islands so we did a lot of sight-seeing with them and they will come back. They fell in love with Maui but will see other islands too. We had another friend, who was born and raised here, but she hadn't been to Maui in many years and she was horrified and said that the island is completely ruined so everyone has different opinions of a place they visit.

We enjoyed our stay very much and will be back next year, I hope. My SO did OK but he made a nasty fall. We didn't go snorkeling and that was hard to swallow for me. I had my wetsuit and snorkeling gear with me for nothing.

We also met several TUGgers who were in Maui too. That was fun.

    Aloha

So glad to see and hear from you again. What a great trip to one of your favorite places in the world. I'm anxious to hear even more of your adventures there. I hope SO is okay from the fall.

If you took some photos of the whales, please share them. Have a safe trip home.

      Hi Emmy ,

It's so great to hear that you had a wonderful, long vacation. We have been sick at home every since we got back from our week there. We should have stayed on Maui!

Sorry to hear about Peter's fall, but I hope he still had a good time.

I know what you mean about the snorkeling. Our trip in March was the first time that I was able to really snorkel without worrying so much about the kids, and I had been missing being in the water. We are PADI divers and haven't been diving in about 10 years because of the kids.

If we meet up there again, you can go snorkeling with me and my DH can hang out with Peter on your fabulous lanai!

Glad to hear your having fun but remember to relax. You have so much energy to do every thing. I should only hope I have that same energy now.

Also happy to hear your month went well and sorry about Peter's fall. We'll be at Newport Coast in late August if you are in town.

              Mike,

I didn't take the camera on our whale watching tour because I prefer to see them in reality than through the viewfinder of a camera. My SO always took these pictures in the past. We had a safe trip home but my DH tripped on the plane but he was lucky that another passenger caught him so he didn't hurt himself. Traveling is very hard for him, I am finding out to my chagrin.

              Denise,

              That is a deal!

Denise was one of the TUGgers who I met and I also met Kauai Kid "Sterling" and Rick and Cindy from Colorado. I enjoyed meeting everyone as timeshare forum people are special! We all love to travel and have enough space and comfort.

You will, if you keep on that great diet you wrote about but forget it for a week when you are spending time in a mandatory A-I resort in Mexico this week. The first time, you will pig out as we did that too but after that first time, you won't do it again. We must have put on 10 lbs in two weeks only at that resort (Grand Velas) and we didn't walk it off or exercised.

Mike, I forgot to mention that we went to visit the Worldmark/Trendwest resort in Kihei. You will like to visit there one day as it is nice and comfy and right across from a great public beach. Here is a photo for you. These beaches are enjoyed by the local people too and they are watching the sun go down just like the tourists. We love staying in Kihei.

                  Emmy,

Thank you so much for the picture. It is a beautiful sunset. I will go to Hawaii one of these days but there are other areas I want to go to first.

Glad you and Peter are home safely.

                    Great picture!

I was interested to hear your report of a larger whale population. We plan to go to Maui next year, the first week in March, and the last time we were there (several years ago) people said it was "whale soup" in early March. I can only imagine what it will be like next year.
