  • Delta adds $110 fuel surcharge

Delta Airlines on Monday added a $110 roundtrip fuel surcharge on its Los Angeles-Honolulu flights.

The notice was posted Friday on the Web site of California-based travel company Pleasant Holidays. As of Monday, online fares for travel in mid-July between L.A. and Honolulu ranged from $726 on Northwest Airlines to $1,441 on Delta Air Lines.

Airline capacity from the West Coast to Hawaii was reduced by 94,000 a seats a month with the shutdown of Aloha Airlines on March 31 and ATA Airlines on April 2.

With the exception of a new Hawaiian Airlines route between Honolulu and Oakland, launched Thursday, U.S. carriers have not added capacity.

Hawaiian is owned by Hawaiian Holdings (AMEX: HA).

United Airlines, American Airlines, US Airways, Mesa Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Continental Airlines fly regularly scheduled routes between Hawaii and the mainland.

The interesting thing is on United for the week that I'm going to Kona, the prices are going down. How does any of this make any sense??

            WOW!

This is certainly going to help make my decision for next summer easier.

Delta is well on its way to playing the game of the European legacies, using fuel surcharges to advertise teaser fares that aren't so great when you add in the massive surcharges and adding surcharges to award flights. They started this game with TATL flights from some European markets in January, expanded it to all flights leaving Europe, and are now gradually taking it across the rest of their system. Is this new surcharge also applied to award flights? Given what they are doing in Europe, I suspect that it is, and that really devalues Delra ff mles. The surcharges from Europe are in the $200+ range RT.

All of this means that we Northwest ff'ers just need to fight harder through the regulators to fend off takeover by these Delta pirates. Being given DL Skymiles for my Worldperks miles one for one is about like being given $ for my € one for one.

And so the big question for me will be, is the fuel surcharge retroactive to tickets which have already been purchased? We have seats on Unite for HNL next Jaunuary and I certainly WON'T be pleased if I'm hit with an additional surchage on top of what I've already paid them.

I know the cruise lines were getting good at tacking on a fuel surcharge and trying to collect it from people who already had reservations booked. I believe the AG for the state of FL put a stop to that practice.

At any rate, if this is the way it's going to go then I'm glad we're making this one trip to Hawaii. With the way things are going at the airlines, it won't take to many more years before I'm choosing a majority of vacation destinations that are within driving distance.

Of course this will likely only be a problem until a good enough alternative fuel is developed, making oil almost obsolete. The oil companies need to make their money now. I feel that there will be an end point where someone else builds a better, more affordable mouse trap and oil won't be in nearly as high of a demand as it is today.

We fly out of Edmonton Alberta so are used to high prices to Hawaii. Seems like anything under $1000 is a bargain now
