  • Need help picking resorts in Hawaii

DH and I decided that we would like to go next summer, no kids. What are some resorts you'd recommend? We are open to anything as we've never been to Hawaii. I am going to request Marriott Ko Olina for sure, but what others are great? We want a really high-end resort if possible, otherwise we may do one of the timeshare previews and pay the $ at Marriott, Hilton or Westin. Any other hints for the request? We'll be trading a 1BR, fairly strong trader. We are hoping to snag something good if less and less people are going to Hawaii with the economy.

Are you more interested in which island you'll go to, or which resort?

We don't care about which island, but really prefer the more lush, tropical resort to those that are more sparse if that makes sense...we like a beach that has some shade, and we LOVE great pools...It seems like from Salt Lake we can get decent fares to Honolulu, and then Maui is more and the others even higher...

Not sure which Islands you'd like to visit, but Marriott & Westin are in Maui, and Kauai, as well.

        Hilton doesn't trade through II.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

We know we can find great things to do at any of the islands...and a lot of the time we'd like to spend at the resort relaxing with some sightseeing.

Marriott Kaua'i Beach Club fits that description better than any other Hawai'i resort I can think of.

Spectacular pool. The ground are large and lushly landscaped. The Kalapaki Beach in front of the resort is easy to get to and has decent shade.

Kaua'i itself is the loveliest of the islands, with most lush forests and vegetation. Being located in Lihu'e, KBC is centrally located to either go north to Princeville or west to Po'ipu, Waimea Canyon, and Polihale.

Thanks, that sounds great. I'll add that to our list!

We get deals all of the time for 5 nights for around $800 w/ car rental at Westin, Hilton and Marriott so we can always resort to that but would rather trade a week I already own...

Keep in mind that Marriott has a 24 day Marriott to Marriott trade restriction so there is a LOT of competition to get those resorts.
                Westin/Starwood has a 3 day preference.

What time of year do you want to go??? - please be specific to the month(s) - that Will let Angela give u a better answer as she searches all the time.

We would like to go in June, July or August, it doesn't really matter. We need our teenage babysitter to be out of school so she can watch our girls during the day...and then my Mom watches them at night.

And does the week u r using to trade have preference in Marriott or Starwood?

I think if u look through the sightings board u will see that Starwood never (never say never I know ) deposits summer weeks - high season.

Hopefully others will have a better idea of what other resorts u can try for based on your week ownership.
Another thought is to use TPI or Hawaii/Platinum Interchange (is that the name?) for a better selection of resorts......
OR - how about a direct exchange of one of your DVC weeks with a Starwood/Marriott owner?

True.....Any other time, and you would have a shot. I don't think that I've ever seen Mid June, July & August, deposited in II.

That would leave you Marriott, but with the 24 day preference, that's not gonna be easy, either, unless you have a Marriott. But, if not, you do still have a shot, as long as you have a strong trader.

What I would do is put in my request immediately. You can add some other alternative resorts around Oct-Nov, if nothing comes through. The only other thing is that you might be able to grab a Marriott during flexchange, next year.

Ok, thanks for all of the info. I didn't realize my chances would be so slim...I guess I was thinking most would prefer Hawaii in winter/cold months not summer. We would rather go other months but can't if we leave our dds behind...I guess it's worth a shot! I don't have a Marriott or Starwood, and we are always in the negative with DVC points!!! We only have a small contract...our best option may be the $800 timeshare tour...they said we could upgrade for $200 to a 1BR at Marriott Ko Olina or Maui. Thanks!

To be honest, my friend took that offer several years ago - I believe at the time it was 5 or 6 nights plus a rental car.

I don't mean to be discouraging but summer is definitely prime time along with the Jan-April time frame - all those people with kids travel June-August .... on the other hand, if u r flexible and REALLY can travel those 10 summer weeks and would be open to resorts other then Marriott/Starwood, you have NOTHING to lose and everything to GAIN by putting in a search for say 6-8 resorts (including MAR/Starwood) and 8-10 weeks.

It is VERY unusual to see Hawaii weeks sitting online but that doesn't mean no one exchanges - it means that whatever is deposited gets picked up by an ongoing search.
