Kauai Resorts: Pls rank by preference

Hello. To those familiar with the following resorts, please arrange them in order of preference (best first per your standards): Lawai Beach Resort, Cliffs at Princeville, Worldmark Kapaa, Pono Kai, Alii Kai Resort. Am planning a trip for summer of 2007 and just want to have some idea. Appreciate responses.

Those cannot be ranked without having expessed some type of preference. One of the biggest is whether you want lush greenery and tropical greenery over sunshine and beaches.

Different people have different preferences, and those preferences are the bigger component of the ranking. For ourselves, when we visit Hawaii we want tropical beaches and sunshine. So, for us, almost any south shore property is better than any north shore property. Being in the middle - near Kapa`a, is the worst choice - because you short yourself on both of those things.

A Different Opinion!

And, see how different we all are. We love staying in Kapaa because we can go whatever direction we choose for the day! However, next time out we are thinking of staying at Embassy or one of the north shore timeshares.

Which is precisely my point. Ranking doesn't mean anything without criteria.

If the OP had posted, "These are our criteria; how do resorts rank against these criteria?", we could provide meaningful responses.

My wife says, "I live in Seattle. I don't need to go on vacation to see rain."

OTOH - one time when we were at LIH waiting for the interisland to HNL, the family standing in line in front of us was effusing about Princeville. They lived in San Diego and loved the change in climate and all of the greenery.

How about just comparing the resorts themselves? Family of 3 going (son 10 years old). I don't have specific criteria, just use your own standards. Thanks.

Same comment as before. It means nothiing without criteria. We like the Embassy because it is more like a residential complex than a resort such as the Marriotts. Some people don't like the Embassy because it lacks the resort amenities that the Mariotts have.

A better thought. Go to TUG and pay the $15 to join (if you're not already a member) and look at the numerical ratings for the resorts, as well as the resort reviews.

The numerical ratings will give you exactly what you are looking for, with input from many more people than you would ever get responding to this thread.

Personally, I think the whole numerical ratings business is bunch of garbage and I don't provide any numeric ratings for resorts. But if you think it's meaningful, that's the best place to get what it appears you're after.

Given the criteria that has been given (one son, 10-years old) I would pick Lawaii Beach Resort, and then hope you don't get a unit in the DCB.

The beach is right across the road and a wonderful restaurant and sunset viewing place is right across the road also. The resort itself is nice, with lush garden pool, ample hot tubs and BBQ grills. There is a second pool/hot tub/BBQ area by the DCB.

Two great golf courses are nearby, Poipu Bay--site of the Grand Slam--and Kiahana (huna?). The Spouting Horn is right down the road. Lihue and all of it's attractions are a short drive, including even more great golf courses--Grove Farm and the two Lagoons courses.

Waimea Canyon is not far away and Polihale State Park also not far. There's plenty of attraction along that road to the west.

A trip to Kapaa is also an easy drive and if you want to venture to Princeville you can easily do that, see what there is to see, and make it back home to Poipu.

So, I guess in my way of thinking, Poipu is equally in the middle of things, probably more so than Kapaa if you want to see the entire island.

I like the Marriott's Kauai Beach Club. It is on the beach, quite a few restaurants at the resort and nearby. Sunny part of the island. For those who like Princeville, I think Westin Princeville is the best.

I agree. There is a wealth of info on numerous resorts; every resort on your list is there. The info is very well organized--easy to compare between resorts.

In Princeville, the Alii Kai over the Cliffs.
In Kapaa, Pono Kai over the Worldmark
Lawai Beach was covered well by JLB

We like the Poipu Beach area the best so far, however, there is no a/c at Lawai Beach resort so if that is important, factor it in. Pono Kai has a/c in the bedrooms.

You can call Lawai Beach a week or so early and make a unit request but you are definitely standing in line behind the owners. The Alii and Banyan buildings give the best views. Try to avoid the Coral and Lika Lani buildings.

It was 10 years ago next month and I don't recall AC being an issue at either LBR or PP. I do recall that PP only had AC in the Master Suite. Either would be the best of our 100-plus exchanges.

We were there just after the Grand Slam at Poipu Bay Country Club, the one where Payne Stewart would have played if he had lived another few weeks.
