Hawaii--Jan-March
LOL, yep, can't think of a single bad month to go to Hawaii! Over 20 years of yearly trips to the Islands, what I notice is people tend to travel during months where the weather is bad where they live. Eastern and midwest people tend to go during the winter more often while we, who live in Arizona, tend to go more in July and August. Families also tend to travel during summer months which fit better with school schedules. IF you go during the winter months, I would suggest you stay on the south shore of which ever Island you decide on. The south shores tend to be sunnier and have safer waters than north shores during the winter months. January through March on Maui are incredible--seems even the humpback whales agree! Those are prime months for whale watching. My hubby and I sat on a Maui beach for a long time watching Momma whale teaching Baby whale how to breach and do fin slaps. There would be this huge body throwing itself into the ocean with a thunderous splash following by this tiny (relatively speaking, of course) body with a much much smaller splash. Once Junior got the idea, though, we counted over 20 continous breaches--frankly, I think she has a hyper kid on her hands, ahhhhh, fins! <vbg>

Originally posted by falmouth3OK, so if I want to see baby whales, I know I have to go Feb or March. I remember reading about someone watching whales from their lanai. What resort/island should I request so that I can see whales from my lanai?
Also, if you are looking for 2010, you're already too late.Luanne

We see whales from our lanai every year and one of our timeshares is in Kihei on Maui where they have a project going on that you can hear them live. It was free last year and I listened to it in the evening when I was on the Internet while sitting on our lanai. I just checked and they are getting ready for the next season again. Have a look here.
When you snorkel you may even hear them yourself if they are not far from you. We have heard them several times already but seeing them in reality is such a thrill. I would take a whalewatching tour too. We always go with the Pacific Whale Foundation but there are many other boats you can choose from. If you go late in the afternoon, you may get a big discount. We have done that too on the spur of the moment because the ocean was calm and then you see them so much better. You can even see them from the beach or shore.
We have been in January and were disappointed. I believe that February and March are the best whale watching months but we saw so many last year even in April. You never know when they leave but suddenly, they all seem to be gone and most of the boats stop having tours in the middle of April.

We normally go in the Fall to Kauai and the Big Island. It's usually the warmest then. This year we went in February and found it generally more breezy, a bit cooler as a result of the breeze and increased wave height. I like to snorkle and they say the water is a little less clear in February. We saw some whale spouting off the coast of the BI and while sitting at our table at Kona's Bubba Gumps and taking in the ocean view, up popped a spinner dolphin completely out of the water! It seemed like we had more sprinkles than normal in Feb, but we've experienced typhoon downpours in October one year. I would prefer to go anytime other than summer when the plane, beaches and pools are loaded with children. garyd210

By extension, whales should be visible from any ocean front property on the west shore of Maui, but I am reporting what I have seen and/or resorts I have visited.
