Beaches, beaches, beaches! That's one of the main reasons we go to Kauai--that and to get away from over yearly 100 plus consecutive days over 105 degrees! While the kids were there, KALIHIWAI Beach was once again their favorite--lots of great waves to boogie board, just like they remembered from their previous trips. We came equipped with sand chairs, umbrellas, great books and coolers full of ice water, sodas and lunches. Each visit lasted at least 5 hours if not more, but, that's fine with me, I can never get too much beach time. HANALEI BAY was where they tried surfing--I picked the spot--great waves for first time surfers (although they are both experienced on the boogie boards and took to surfing quite quickly) and right in front of the life guard tower! Nothing dumb about me! My favorite area on Hanalei Bay is the area by the pier--the scenery is eye poppingly beautiful! However, with 10 foot hammerhead sharks being spoted around the pier and the beach closed for a couple of days, I thought around the bend might be better. After the kids left, Tom, my brother, Gary, and SIL, Kindra, headed to Hanalei Bay by the pier. There had been quite a lot of rain the day before and the water was very very murky and muddy (a favorite places for sharks to hide). Thus we returned to our original spot by the lifeguard. However, my very favorite beach, Anini Beach, called to us so Tom and I spent several long days tucked away in "our spot"--an area we've loved for 21 years. There is something about that beach that soothes my soul. We loved having the teens with us, they are great travelers, but it was nice to be by ourselves at Anini Beach in Paradise!
