    KALIHIWAI BEACH AND MACHETE MAN:
A little background: (We have two hand signals in our family that are for emergency only communication between any adult member to any child. IF the child is in trouble and needs immediate help from any family adult at any time or anywhere, they are to raise both arms above their head and wave them back and forth and the first adult who sees them is to repond immediately. The other is to communicate to the child that they are to go to the nearest family adult immediately. This is done by the adult make two fists and holding them in front of them close together with the thumbs up in the air (kind of like when people hitchhike but with the thumbs facing up and the finger knuckles facing each other). If there is danger, the adult raises both fists up and down quickly). The last time we went to Kalihiwai for the two teens to boogie board became a wee bit scary! We had been there for a couple of hours and the kids decided to head over the Kalihiwai River where there is a tree rope that one can swing out over the river and then let go to fall into the water. They had been over there for some time so Tom and my SIL walked over there to check to see how they were doing. They were having a great time, but, Tom and Kindra both noticed a car pull up and park under the trees. Two men in their early 20's got out, one with a large machete in his hands. Their actions were those of people who are high on drugs and "Machete Man" was hacking at the trees and anything else in sight, hollaring and twirling. The two started walking toward the river (the kids couldn't spot them because of the way the river is). When they got closer, Kindra, immediately enacted the emergency signal and, luckily, the kids saw it and immediately came to them. These two guys, went to the rope and were hacking around at everything, climbing up tne tree to get the rope etc all the while swinging the very large machete. Needless to say, our group vacated that area and came back to where we all were sitting on the beach. While we kept a close eye on them, the one guy climbed up the tree about 20-30 foot and jumped off into the water. I'm surprised he didn't break his neck. Soooo, people, if you go to Kalihiwai Beach you just might want to keep out an eye for probaboy drugged out Machete Man! Me ke aloha pumehana, Juleen
