Kauai officials were keeping a nervous eye on its aged reservoirs as rain continued to fall last week, but tourist areas were not immediately threatened despite threats to residential areas.
As of press time Friday, dozens of homes and two businesses in the Koloa district were being evacuated after the Waita Reservoir spilled into Waikomo Stream and flooded the neighborhood upstream from the beach resorts of Poipu.
Even as more rain was forecast, things were returning somewhat to normal on the island's North Shore after one lane of the Kuhio Highway to Princeville and Hanalei reopened. It had been closed since Tuesday, when the Ka Loko Dam above Kilauea burst, unleashing 300 million gallons of water. Two bodies have been recovered and five others are still missing.
The 252-room Princeville Resort, the North Shore's largest hotel, brought back guests who were moved to other sites because of the highway closure. Officials estimate it could be two to four months before both lanes of the highway reopen.
