  • Kauai keeps eye on reservoirs after flood

Kauai officials were keeping a nervous eye on its aged reservoirs as rain continued to fall last week, but tourist areas were not immediately threatened despite threats to residential areas.

As of press time Friday, dozens of homes and two businesses in the Koloa district were being evacuated after the Waita Reservoir spilled into Waikomo Stream and flooded the neighborhood upstream from the beach resorts of Poipu.

Even as more rain was forecast, things were returning somewhat to normal on the island's North Shore after one lane of the Kuhio Highway to Princeville and Hanalei reopened. It had been closed since Tuesday, when the Ka Loko Dam above Kilauea burst, unleashing 300 million gallons of water. Two bodies have been recovered and five others are still missing.

The 252-room Princeville Resort, the North Shore's largest hotel, brought back guests who were moved to other sites because of the highway closure. Officials estimate it could be two to four months before both lanes of the highway reopen.

Does anyone know how the situation is in Kauai?

There were some last call type weeks there recently but they had so much rain in March that are things have been a bit problematic with flooding and the dam bursting, highway closing, etc...

      Headline News . . .

today is reporting the lawsuits following the dam break. From what I understand it was a private dam and the owner(s) is/are being sued. The owner is new to the property and claims to have been unaware/uniformed of any danger, and there are claims that the State was aware of dangers and did not inform the owner or public.

      Blame game.
