  • Paniolo Greens - Island of Hawaii

We have a unit on hold at

    Paniolo Greens
    68-1845 Waikoloa Road
    Waikoloa, HI 96738

    for January 2010.

Any input? First visit to the island of Hawaii.

We've stayed there several times and have been quite happy. The units are large and the resort is on a golf course. However, it's not near the coast. You've got about a 15 to 20 minute drive to the beach. But it is a good location for getting to Waimea, Hawi and the area at the "north" end.

We have never regretted staying at Paniolo. We have stayed there 3 times. There is a small grocery nearby, and the road is a short drive down to A beach or to the main road. But yes, it is not near the beach, and it is in a mixed use condo/resort configuration.

Personally I didn't care for it, to me it felt like the suburbs - even though it wasn't outskirts of a town or city - sort of artificial. I've been to the Big Island 4x from the east coast now, I really do love it there - but that was the only stay I didn't thoroughly enjoy. There wasn't anything wrong with the units, and they're not that far from some nice spots, and I even like lava fields. But IMO it's too far to travel, and too expensive to get there, to settle for that and I wouldn't do it again. There are many other more appealing places with timeshares on the Big Island, in either Kona or Waikoloa. Or even Punalu'u. JMHO!

This is a 2 bedroom unit, are there a lot of two bedroom units at the other resorts on Hawaii?

There are more 2 bedrooms on Hawaii than the other islands. Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort is all 2 bedrooms, I think the other Wyndhams, or at least some of them, may be as well. I'm not sure how much winter inventory shows up, though, so check the Ex-Ops. I just checked for Kona Hawaiian Resort, and the Jan 09 weeks were banked in Feb of 07, and I don't see any Ex-Ops for the Jan 2010 weeks, so not sure if they ever showed up.

Although nothing is sitting online at the moment as far as I can see, I've seen plenty of 2-BR's in very nice resorts during all seasons. And these days with higher airfares, I expect we'll be seeing even more.

I don't know what you're trading or how long you've been searching, but if you have some reasonable trade power and want coastal, beautiful landscape, and/or an area with at least a few elements of local or old Hawaii, without having to drive miles to get there, I bet an ongoing search would get you a 2-BR in not too much time.

On the other hand, lots of folks do like Paniolo Greens - it just didn't have the attributes of what I love most about Hawaii, especially with so many other options.

Edited to add: I assume you want January of 2010 only. But if you can travel during any non-peak seasons, like late fall, there's usually lots and lots of availability.

I would agree with Laurie here, if you feel that you have the time, and trade power....while we have enjoyed any time at Paniolo that we have spent there, it is very likely that a January (especially early Jan) week in 2010 would pop up for something in the beach areas.

Also, Trading Places often has Mauna Loa in their inventory....again it isn't in the most perfect location, however, it is close to the Kailua-Kona area, and a good launch to get to Volcanoes NP.

We have 5 adults, my wife and myself and three of her sisters. Does anyone know if they have roll-a-beds? We would need four beds.

If you are asking about Paniolo Greens they will accomodate 5. The master bedroom has a queen, or king, the second bedroom has two beds, and there is also a fold out sofa. There is a configuration that has two bedrooms upstairs, with two bathrooms, and a small den (with tv) with an attached bathroom downstairs (which is nice for the person who is sleeping on the pull out as it kind of gives them their own "room".

Kona Coast has 2 br units and the 1br units are also very large.
