  • Advice? 2 nights in Maui -- where to stay?

I'm still working on my cousin's anniversary trip -- she's going to stay one week on the Big Island and then I thought she should go to Maui for a weekend and they fly home from there. If it works out, she'll be on Maui July 3 for two nights. Any advice on where she should stay and what is a must do for what is probably her first and only visit to Maui?

    Thanks,
    Debi

If it was only two nights in a hotel I would try for the Sheraton Black Rock or the Westin Maui. If they don't have a budget you might also suggest The Grand Wailea. I have some friends that stayed there and raved about it.

For a great meal Kimos in Lahaina
And for Luaus we have been to the Old Lahaina Luau and the Sheraton and would recommend either.

Grand Wailea in July will be overrun with kids because of the pools - I sent friends there and they found it less than romantic.......

For a Maui honeymoon I would sooner recommend the Hotel Hana Maui www.hotelhanamaui-- but that's me -- quiet, romantic, beautiful Old Hawaii, with the Road to Hana on the way, maybe a stop at Mama's Fish House on the way to or from...

Keep watching internet specials for Sheraton Maui-Black Rock Ka'anapali Beach area about 35 -45 minutes from the airport. It was wonderful. We snagged an oceanview room for $199 internet price normally $400-$600 range this May. Saw it around February. Got there and was upgraded to OF. You may have to prepay to secure that price. Called the hotel itself and they could not offer the online pricing. Also takes AAA discount on top of the internet prices.

I just priced it 7/3/09 for 2 nights and it was $350-$595 range but it may come down again and get a deal like we did. There was a room garden view with a King bed for $319 AAA rate.

Starwood Hawaii Hotels & Resorts - Sheraton Maui Resort - Lahaina, Maui Vacation

Wailea area is closer to the airport as is Kihei. Wailea has many upscale resorts and a great beach near Grand Wailea. There is also a walking trail by the beach and resorts.

Yes vote to dine in the daytime at Mama's Fish House in Paia. What a view right out of a magazine plus a great meal. About $50pp but worth it for the experience and do have the concierge make reservations by the windows.

Hotels.com had The Whaler for $300 a night.

Marriott Wailea and Grand Wailea prices are $450 plus right now.

One could always book something then watch for last minute specials that may be cheaper than paying 3 nights in a hotel. The other thought is a try it package that hovers around $700 but I would not want a TS tour on my honeymoon.

This may be very good advice but it depends on the people:
It looked real nice when we saw it and come to think of it we have had 2 sets of good friends that really liked it both both had kids. On second thought it may depend on how old or how old they think they are. We took another family with us to the Grand Mayan in Nuevo on spring break 2 years ago the father was over 50 and went down the slides more than the kids. I am a little under 50 and I thought it was a blast.

I'd spend one night in or near Lahaina, and one night in or near Hana.

They might want to decide on location first, then figure out best available accommodations.

My cousin is letting me decide everything. I've never been to Hawaii, so I'm counting on the seasoned travellers on these boards to steer me in the right direction

You know, there are a few "inn" rooms at Mama's Fish House. The mid-island location is perfect for such a short stay, and the setting is beautiful, romantic...
Pricey, but if not out of the question since it's just two nights then definitely worth considering:

I saw those rooms at the Inn. It looked very pretty. She doesn't want me to spend any more than $200 per night.
