  • My 5 year old son and 11 year old daughter saved a life at Black Rock yesterday

We had just gone out snorkeling and were around the point at Black Rock and not in sight of the beach in front of the Sheraton. We had stopped there to look at an octopus and I was diving down to point it out to my kids. My daughter was in full snorkel gear and my son tags along without fins and in swim goggles hanging on to a boogie board which we tow. They are both very comfortable in the water and on our snorkel trips.

When I popped back up I was trying to keep an eye on the octopus and my daughter swam over to me with my son. I asked what they were doing and where was the boogie board. They had given it to an older couple as he was having trouble breathing. We went back over to check on them and he was complaining of being out of breath and just wanted to catch his breath. He was completely coherent and had fins but she did not have fins. He could not catch his breath so they were going to keep the boogie board and swim in and give it to my wife on the beach. My kids and I thought better of it and decided that we should tow them in to be sure they were safe.

As we were towing them in with the man hanging on to the boogie board as well as my son and my daughter assisting me, another man saw us trying to pull the whole load and joined in to help tow all the way back to shore. Thank goodness he helped as I was totally pooped when we finally made it to shore.

The man insisted he was ok....but now we could not find his wife who we lost track of while towing him in. I waited on shore until he spotted her and swam out to her to see if she was ok which she was. It turns out she had stopped to assist a young kid who was separated from his parents while out snorkeling.

We got to shore and the man seemed fine. The woman thanked us and we both agreed that her husband needed to see a doctor. She asked our name and where we were staying. This morning we got a call from the front desk saying we had a boogie board and a fresh pineapple at the front desk. We went to pick it up and there was a thank you note attached saying that the man, Frank, was in the hospital and apparently had a heart attack and was undergoing testing.

We are very proud of our kids helping out someone in need even in a scary situation way out in the ocean.

That's a great story. I'm sure you're very proud of your children, as you should be. People are often in denial about having heart attacks.

Years ago I kept urging an elderly neighbor to let me take him to the hospital. Finally he agreed and it turned out that he'd also had a heart attack. Luckily he also survived.

What bragging rights your kids have now!

Thank god you guys were were you were chances are he would not have made it.
I tried saving someone when I was young and failed , You do not forget the images. Another time my self and my friend had to be saved because we were both drunk he got in trouble and started pushing me down then I did the same , Life guard came out with his buoy and towed us both in.
My son on the other hand saved a 2 year old that fell in the pool , Father was standing right there and had no idea until my son handed him back his kid.

Red, you must be so proud of your kids. The older couple sounds pretty special, too, I fear not many would go out of their way to follow up like that in the wake of such a health emergency on vacation.

Frank, I hope you know better now than to drink and swim

Wow, touching story and so thankful that you and your kids were there. We have snorkeled at Black Rock many times and love to hang out and just look at everything on both sides. Great that you saw an octopus, and obviously even greater that you saved a life. I hope that Frank is doing okay.

What a nice story to read and how thoughtful of your kids to offer the boogie board to this couple and then you all trying to get him safe to the shore. Nice couple too for letting you know that they appreciated your deed. I hope he will be OK but your family saved his life. You and the kids are Z best and so was the wife trying to help someone else!
