  • The best things to do on the Big Island.... need input

After my other thread on my favorite things about Hawaii, Kenny asked me about my favorite restaurants on the Big Island. I realized that I didn't have any recommendations for food. I think that's mostly due to the fact that when we are on the Big Island, we tend to eat at the condo. We will be heading to the Big Island, so I would like some input on restaurants and things to do so that I can check them out for everyone.

I am much more familiar with the activities on Big Island. Our favorites are:

    1) Sunset and Star Gazing on Mauna Kea. You start off right before dusk, hike around the telescopes, watch the sun set. If you are lucky, you see the green flash. Then, you go back down to about 10000 feet and get an astronomy lesson on the constellations.

    2) Scuba diving with the Mantas. You plant yourself in the rocks about 30 feet under water. The mantas come right near your head and you can see right into their mouthgs.

    3) Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour of the Volcanos. It's best when the lava is flowing. Fun to see the glowing red and lava falling into the sea.

    4) Hike the volcano at night. Fun seeing the glowing lava in the dark.

    5) Coffee plantation tours and tasting. My favorite is Holualoa right near Kona town. I love their french roast coffee.

    6) Macadamia Nut and Orchid tours. Fun to see how they make and grow these native Hawaiian products.

What are your can't miss activities and restaurants?

For us, whale watching off any beach in the North, and eating a dinner or lunch at Merriman's in Waimea.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Kona Brewing Company A little hard to find in town but worth it.

The Aloha Theatre cafe has very good breakfast and lunch though it is 20 minutes outside of town on the main highway.

This is a very nice restaurant in the same shopping mall as the Safeway.
O's Bistro has gourmet food, a nice wine list and reasonably priced.
O's Bistro Restaurant, Kailua Kona Hawaii I highly recommend this one.

The rack of lamb at the Outback was good.

The Hilton Waikoloa is about 35 minutes from Kona past the airport.
        Donatoni's is good Italian food.
The train going throughout the property in the Hilton is fun.

Gee Jim -- all your ideas are such easy ones (just kidding!). How about activities for the 'rocking chair' groups?
