  • Kona Hawaiian

We have booked ourselves for our Honolulu 3 night stay and the Wyndham Hawaiian Beach Walk, Kauai, at the Point at Poipu, and now need to get reservations on Kona. My question is this: In your opinion is it worth it to stay at the Kona Hawaiian resort which is not on the water, or the Royal Sea Cliff? They are both open for when we want to go. The Kona Hawaiian has either a 2 bedroom deluxe or a 2 bedroom presidential suite open. The only problem that I can see is the 2 bedroom presidential suite is a handicapped unit which we don't need or want. I appreciate the help as I need to book today.

I much prefer Kona Hawaiian Resort personally. Even though the Royal Sea Cliff has nice pictures and is on the ocean, only a very small part of the resort is that way. Kona Hawaiian Resort is a very nice setting.

I like Kona Hawaiian Resort better. I have stayed there and the units are in very good condition. It is a low rise complex of individual buildings. The other resort I have not stayed at but walked through and it smelled a little bit, and appeared to be one big building with an unaesthetic long walk from entry to poolside. The pool at SeaCliffs does have an ocean view, while the one at KHR dosen't, but the latter is beautifully landscaped. For either one you will need to leave the resort and drive in order to appreciate the Big Island.

I prefer Kona Hawaiian as it is much newer, and various other reasons mentioned. Staff was also great.

Royal Sea Cliffs is older and shows it's age. Few units have ocean views. Non swimming beachfront. That said, we still very much enjoyed our week there (2005). The place "grew on us." The pool area (there are 2) where the grills are and picnic tables is fantastic. There was a small working kitchen with fridge and formica table top to prep food adjacent to the large grills.
My husband had a great day fishing, and we grilled some mahi there. Met up with other couples while there and we all shared whatever we had and dined while watching a beautiful sunset. Although we had NOT planned to cook much, we found that we loved the little informal group we had stumbled upon, and only ended up dining out 2 nights! If this interests you, I would call the RSC to make sure the set up is still the same.

If you stay at Kona HV, you can still got to RSC for sunset (there are a few benches along the walkway).

I concur the better place in our opinion is the Kona Hawaiian Resort. I believe the main difference between the 2-bedroom deluxe and the Presidential is that the Presidential does not have a sleeper sofa and only sleeps 4 versus 6 in the Deluxe. They are the same square footage of 1156. It probably has some nicer appliances.

                Not an ad

Thinking about the Big Island, I'd like to recommend the Hawaii Forest and Trails Association. Their office is near the airport, and they do have a web site....sorry, I don't have the exact address. They organize hikes to really special places on the Big Island, often going into areas where you need a special permit. The tour guides are great, not only very pleasant but really well prepared. They are a little pricey, but well worth it.....you'll have a special hiking experience. They grade their hikes, so you'll have an idea if it fits your capabilities. Either my sister or I sign up for one of their hikes every time we are on the Big Island.

If you haven't been to the Big Island already, and don't have a copy yet, be sure to buy The Big Island Revealed. A great book.

Also, here is a great site to check out for information. You do need to register to post, but it's free.

Late to this thread, and presume by now you have decided on Kona Hawaiian, which is what I would recommend [warning, biased post as I own there, but I only bought after staying and enjoying it so much].

I highly recommend visiting the Kapoho Tide Pools for some low-key snorkeling with great visibility. Most days (definitely on weekends) there's a ranger there to explain things and make sure people don't park where the tide will be coming in ...

They're on the easternmost tip of the island, near Volcanoes NP, so it's a bit of a haul from Kona. But, if you're making a day trip to Hilo, it's worth a stop if you go the southern way.

                        Great resort

We have been going to the KHV since 2003, before Farfield/Wyndham became involved and it just keeps getting better. They have upgraded all the small appliances, the are now Cuisinart. Most of the units now have flat panel tv's, the free wifi is nice also.
