We've been to Hawaii 6 times and can't wait to go back! Kauai is my favorite island, but my husband wants something new...me, I like the same old tropical luxury that we find at Hanalei Bay Resort!

Wish I were still there!
Just got back from our first Hawaii trip. Now I really wish we'd gone when we were younger! Loved Kaua'i and Big Island most, but found Oahu to be too busy, even outside Honolulu. Plan to go back in two years, this time to Maui and Big Island, and stay longer on each island.Jeanne

Never really had any desire, but we had a hotel certificate years ago so my husband and I decided to use it there. We really enjoyed it. Now that the kids are getting older ( 3,3, and 6) and can handle that long trip from the east coast, we will likely plan a 10-day to 2 week summer trip in the next couple years...but have other trips on the horizon already ( like a catamaran in Belize!), so may take a while....but we will get there.
They will love the beaches, lots to see and do, snorkel, kayak, hike. I think it is a nice easy destination for kids.
Everything is basically familiar, just more luscious and scenic. Wouldn't go back as jsut a couple...rather go to a lesser developed caribbean locale...
Hard to explain....I can understand the appeal, but I love exploring new cultures and destinations.

The first time we went to the Hawaiian Islands was in the 70's to Waikiki Beach, Kauai and the big Island with a travel agency. They are still in business today so they are doing something right.
In 1983 we bought our first two week interval timeshare on Maui and have been timesharing every year since then. In the beginning, we exchanged a few times to the other islands but now we just stay on Maui and add time either before or after our trip at one of the other islands but not this year. Going from one island to the other almost takes a whole day so it is better to add a few days to the trip in a hotel or B&B place on the other island or even rent a condo for a week or two. You can do this when you are retired.
I cannot tell you what island we prefer because we like them all. Each one is so different but the Big Island (Hawaii) has the volcano and no other island has an active volcano but it wasn't active or very little this March/April.

We just got back Sunday from 2 weeks in Hawaii. It was our first trip there. We spent the first week on the Big Island at the Kona Coast Resort. We were very disappointed with the Big Island and feel it was a waste of our time. The second week we were on Oahu at the Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk resort. We liked Oahu and especially Waikiki. However we will not return to Hawaii. We usually go to the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya for 2 weeks each April. This year we wanted to try Hawaii. To make a long story short, we far prefer the Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya.John

We go to Cozumel 2-4 times per year. We scuba dive and the diving is warmer and more colorful in Cozumel. It is an easy, inexpensive (relatively) trip for us. We love the Carribbean.
As much as I love sitting under a palapa watching the ocean in Cozumel (and I really do love it), being in Hawaii IS different. I love Hawaii more.
I have been several places in Carribbean (Honduras, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, Cozumel), and there are still places that I would love to go: Curacao, Bonaire, Cayman, Belize.
I have been to Hawaii more times than I can count - most trips while I was a teenager. Since being an adult, I have only been twice: once in 1986 and 2009. We will be going back in 2011. Going to Hawaii was the driver that led me to timesharing in a much bigger way than before.
I LOVE Hawaii.

We went to Kauai in 2002, Maui a few years later, and Oahu in January 2010 (we loved the Hilton Hawaiian Village) and even went power hang gliding and sky diving on the north shore of Oahu. It was awesome.
We have a week reserved at the VL Papakea on Maui for November 27-December 4 for our 10th Anniversary. We're hoping to "do" the new zipline there. We want to go to the Big Island some day.
I love the Caribbean but it is much easier to get to Hawaii from California and we don't have to go through all those immigration and customs lines at the airports.
